    Hi all,

A few mins ago I plugged my pc in. As i plugged the psu plug into the wall socket there was a pop to my left from inside my case.
The mobo light was on so i turned on the pc. The fan in my psu was making an odd noise. Not very loud but the sound of a tiny lawnmower (a sort of rata-tata-tata-tata-).

My brother and I took a look with the machine off, we tried moving the fan and it moved fine. We turned on the machine again, same noise, so he tried slowing the fan using a small tool he had. After this the sound was pretty much gone.

Any ideas on what the POP! was? Need I be concerned or was it a minor power surge or something?

if you got a multi-meter check the voltages via the molex connectors, with the 12v and 5v lines are ok, then the psu could be ok.

other than taking the PSU apart and having a good look, i cant say any more.

If you are that worried, RMA the PSU

There's sometimes POPs when the plug isn't all the way in and there's a tiny arc between the connectors. Though I have totally no idea why the fan went lawnmower! Maybe it just decided to break it's bearings at that very second..

All seems well here. No more noise or popping. I shall be keeping a close eye (or an ear) on it though. Thanks for the info guys :)

be carefull, it is possible a inductor or capacitor blew, and bits were touching the fan, was there any sort of smell after it happened. if you can u need to have it tested to make sure ripple voltages are ok, otherwise it could harm the rest of u rig. if it is old and out of warenty open it up andd have a look, ( be carefull of harmfull voltages etc...) or contact the manufacturer for support.
