If this is a specific measure implemented by those boffins in charge, than I've no place to speak (you have to make money somehow), but whilst browsing the forums not five minutes ago, I got a pop-under advertisement while clicking a link from the forums main page (Article Discussion).

This is the link to the advertisement specifically, so as to help identify any errant malefactors at play here, assuming this is unintentional.

If this is a new part of the forums, than can I be the first to say: please no? :(

I have forwarded on your concerns to the advertising department, however I doubt that we are doing such advertising. Have you checked your system is clean?

I've not seen or heard of this either, so I suspect it's from another site?

There no pop- up ad campaigns running on bit-tech. So whatever you experienced has come from another source ( another web site, malware infection etc).

Nothing else running on my exceptionally stripped down, user access only, desktop rig. Earlier that day I had cleaned out all the temp files on it, including those of Firefox (the browser in use at the time), and Bit was the first site visited after the cleaning (unless Google had a hand in it). And no, there were no other pages open at the time.

This has happened once or twice before, but I didn't think anything of it. I don't deny that there is a chance it is my system, but given the circumstances of the latest incident, I have my doubts it was on my side.

So either I'm crazy, or it was a fluke. Good to know :thumb: Thankie!

[EDIT]Just got another one, while using a completely different computer. Same page on this site though. Same link as well.

To the idea of facebook: the computer I'm on now has never been on that site before. Rather, it's only ever been used for a very limited number of things, with my browsing history consumed entirely by four sites, all of which would seem on the level to me (this being the only site with any form of advertising at all).

If it's my side, then it's being shared between two different computers, randomly through the week, only when I click on a forum link on this site. Don't know how to track that one down, really.

Which link are you clicking? Because that advert is definitely not running on bit-tech and nobody else is citing this problem at all.

Last night was the "General Discussion" link, time before that was the "Article Discussion" link. I've honestly got no clue as to the source of this, and do apologise if it is on my end, but admittedly it is a bit strange seeing it on two different computers like that.

Do you use a popup blocker?

Other than the one built into firefox, no. But I do make a point of avoiding any site that does use pop-ups or the such. I'll try and go through my systems to see if there are any real clues as to how this would come about on my side, but I'm unsure where to start.

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but if you haven't already, download and run Spybot S&D.

You might want to disable Teatimer support on install, otherwise it'll notify you every time a program tries to alter the registry.

You'll have better chances of removing stuff by running Windows in safe mode for the scan and remove.

You may want to download and run TSSD killer from Kaspersky. In fact, I'd recommend this to everyone, it finds things you may not know you have. Also run Smitfraudfix in safe mode, again it finds and removes things that Spybot or Malwarebytes misses.

Google both the above for download links and instructions.

I'm an avid user of both the aforementioned bits of software, so I've still some doubt as to it being a local thing.

However, I've not encountered this issue since, so it may well be in the past, whatever the cause was.
