i just downladed the portableapps.com lite suite to my 128MB thumbdrive, and i was setting up my yahoo account on it andi got it working, but it deletes every mail out of my account when it retreives them! how can i set it to delete mails only when i delete them in thunderbird? i want to be able to read my messages without using thunderbird as well.

Assuming you've got a POP3 connection, that's just how it works. I've got the same issue on all of my email clients, which is why I tend to have at least one email address per computer.

Though, if Y! mail supports an IMTP connection, try that. It should only read the contents of the mail from the client, much like the web interface.

If Y! works like Gmail at all, there should be an "all mail" folder around somewhere, that has an archive of all the "deleted" stuff. It's not as convenient, but that's probably the only way you'll get at mail through the web interface if you also want a client-side inbox.

Of course, the whole point of the portable apps is to take them around with you, so in theory it shouldn't be a huge issue. I know the feeling though; but unless there's an option other than POP, you're probably out of luck.

Can't you set Thunderbird to leave a copy of emails on the server?

I'm sure you can get Thunderbird to leave mail on the server, have you tried poking around in account preferences?

EDIT: Bored so I installed it to check:

Go to account preferences, server settings and then tick the box saying leave messages on server. :)

Yup, that's the one fishcake. I quite like the "until I delete them from server" suboption too.

If that doesn't help, see http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=497536 which looks at similar problems with Yahoo mail.
There's a possible solution if you move to GMail.
