About half an hour ago, a car with a not yet known person drove through a croud of people who were watching the queen and other royalties passby in a bus, as a celebration for Queensday. The car managed to injure 14 people badly, and possibly killed 4 people. A small dutch clip of the accident here: They aren't releasing too much information yet, but there will have a press conference about it at 15.45. All the celebrations have been canceled in Apeldoorn (where it happened) and also in Rotterdam. I got 2 high resolution pictures, but they are quite disturbing so I won't post them here.
Seems a very odd way to make a statement and a very ineffectual assault on the royals... bbc have it also: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8026807.stm
Here's a picture of the guy driving the said car: He is in custody and alive, so we will shortly have answers I presume.
No lets NOT post those pictures here please, thanks. People taken away to hospital is fine, but "in action shots", please no.
Yeah my bad, I guess I shouldn't have posted that picture in particular. My apologies. As I said earlier, the person who was driving the car is in custody and alive, so in about an hour and 15 minutes the press conference will start. Interesting to see what this guy motivation was to do this, or if it was an accident.
Wow, I just got back from Amsterdam last night, the whole place was just gearing up for a huge party too. Everyone was in a great mood, Is there some sort of anti royal movement in the Netherlands?
Not that I know of, our queen has always been a good lady, so I can't see why some people would want to hurt any of the royal family. Anyway, the press conference just ended. From the first police officers that were on the scene who talked to the guy in the car, they assume it was a deliberate attack and not an accident. He's a 38 year old guy called K.R. Tates. He's in the hospital at the moment but I guess we will know by tonight why the guy did this. Since that's what most people want to know I guess. They also announced that 4 people lost their lives, 5 who are seriously injured and 8 more injured. What a terrible day -_-'
How... just how did that many people get hurt... it looked like the dude just drove into a lamp post or something..
As I said, he ploughed through a crowd of people who were standing behind steel fences to wave and look at the royal family who were passing by in an open bus. The clips you see are not from the start as you can see by the state of the car. He hit 17 people in total (gladly not more since it was quite crowded), he killed 4, critically injured 5 and 8 more people are injured. The ploughed through the barrier, through the people, through more steel fences, and after that is the stuff you see in the small clips. Which is him hitting the monument (almost hitting that police officer). So yeah, it's more dramatic than you think
Why is it that people who attempt/accomplish killing important people have 3 names? From that clip the car was already messed up, I'm surprised it was still running, and that the driver survived.
Many Dutch tend to be quite Royalist. Others are more indifferent than hostile. It is rare for the Dutch to get so would up about political issues that they go postal. Queen Beatrix is no better or worse than most modern Royals --to her (in her own words) her role is a job. Her mother, Queen Juliana was the last of the Old Skool Royals who saw her position as a calling and a duty. Why did Mark Chapman shoot John Lennon? Just another inadequate seeking attention and grandure in the only way he knows how: by destroying other people's lives and staining the occasion of those he perceives as unjustly richer and more famous than him.
Very sad day in the Netherlands. My friend Paul is from there and sent me a message about it this morning. Not only has this hurt those killed and injured and their families, but it will spoil what is a joyous celebration for years.
