Hi Not sure if this is a silly question (probably is) But i've always ran with either all memory slots occupied or at least a double/triple channel fully occupied. But this is not possible as the cpu cooler is obstructing one of the slots I just want to add some more RAM to my NAS/Server as Windows 8 is using around 3GB of the 4GB I currently have. At the moment I am using Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 2x2GB 1600Mhz (BLT2G3D1608DT2TXOB) I would ideally like to add a single 4GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 1600 stick. Will this work? The question is, can I run a dual channel occupied and a single slot from another dual channel occupied? See Picture as its hard to explain
Yes you can. The extra 4GiB will be mapped to single channel the rest being in dual channel. Windows obviously won't care and will just report 8GiB no matter how many channels the memory is in.
