My sister in uni is having problems with her computer - she told me that when she was using her computer like normal typing in her essay on ms word, the computer just restarted - just like that 15mins later resuming her work, it happened again! Initially im thinking it could be the psu - its a cheapy one that came with the case when i built it for her ...or maybe it's the ram? the gfx is new tho
If it's been working fine until now, and she hasn't changed any hardware it's unlikely.. still.. some specs for the machine would be nice?
oops, sorry where is my manners It's a low budget pc made couple of years ago - AthlonXP 1700+, ECS K7S5A mobo, 40gb hdd, 256mb ddr ram (not sure on the brand). I switched round the PSU however less than a year ago with a 300watt cheap jobby from a generic case. I think i have answered my own question maybe
Maybe yeah... but that system won;t be drawing a great deal of power at all, and even a 300watt supply should cope.. unless it's really crap. I suppose the easiest solution is to swap supplies and see, if that's possible. In the meantime, check that no one has messed with the BIOS, especially RAM timings and volts. Set everything to default/safe, or auto if not already, and see if that helps. You say the gfx is new... what is it? Is it a power hungry card?
Yep it was bought just under a year ago - a cheap one ati radeon 7000 or something like that, seeing the computer is mainly used for word processing and internet. i'll give a shot at the bios/safe mode. thanx for that. If it persists, i'll get another PSU for it
