I am slooowly building a custom plexi case. I am trying to find a way to mount the cdrom so that it is the least intrusive, enabling me to have a much smaller case. I was thinking of mounting it vertically, so that the cdrom tray ejects out of the top of the case. My question is: does anyone know if this will cause read/write problems, or problems with the tray mechanism? I am already aware that I will need to add my own "retainers" to the tray, as the ones I have checked only support the cd when the drive is on edge, not on end. Any thoughts? If you can understand this without pictures, not easily described with words.
i think you can do it with a slot loading drive but ive never heared of it done with a tray based drive before
Yeah, I considered a slot load, but I haven't been able to find a burner in a slot configuration. Plus, I'm a father of three and money is definetly a major consideration, so I'd like to use my existing drive.
if i was you i would keep an eye out on e-bay or a computer fair for a dirt cheap cd-rw drive (we can get really fast drives for a pittence over here brand new) so you should be able to find a cheap drive & try it on that, its what i do & im 18, just finished a 2 year college course & only had a few pounds left @ the end of the day, so just keep your eyes open for a 2nd hand drive or a clearence sale to get a cheap 1
u can do it with tray my mate has done it with a sony cd rom it has this clip which pushed the cdrom in then when it goes in realises the clip and works normal
As long as you have those CD retaining tabs on the tray it should be possible, as these are intended to be used when the cd-rom is mounted on it's side to stop the CD slipping within the drive. Andy
yeah, for an example, look at the drive in the PS2. It can run horizontal or vertical because it has a rim around half of the drawer that keeps the disk in there. When shopping for a try drive, make sure it has something like that. I had an older 24x Creative Labs drive just die that had little swivel tabs that you could swing in or out depending on how the drive was mounted in the case.
pretty much all CD drives come with the abbility to be work vertically, the either have push out clips or tabs that hold the disc in place. personaly i like the laptop style ones where the disc is places directly onto the spindle and that holds it securly in place.
Ok, cool, just wanted to see if anyone knew that it def would NOT work. Most drives have the little tabs on the tray, but they only hold the disk in when the drive is on its side. If the drive is on its end, the disk just slides out...so I plan on adding a couple of tabs of my own to retain it until it closes...probably a couple pieces of plexi glued in place.
aye its fine to do this. ive even ran one upside down! college here does all vertically, even without the retaining clips just to annoy us
