I think this will be a fun thread, post pictures of what your mass transports looks like and, if you can, share some facts about it.

(i know there is a similar thread around, but i think this is more specific and may show some characteristics of each country)

    edit:
we only have buses as mass transit, we had a steam train, but it exploded a long time ago, these buses are from "Horarios do Funchal", they are almost always on time and take you almost everywhere in Funchal, my city. There are other bus companies, but these are the ones i use to go to the university and are also the only company to operate in Funchal.

here you can see 2 of them, an older model in the background, with 2 doors, 1 for entry and one for exit, and a newer model in the foreground with 3 doors, 1 for entry and 2 for exit, these guys run on diesel and create dark of smoke, there are also relatively "old", they mostly have automatic shifters, only some older models have manual shifts, they have a huge amount of power, are very fast and, IIRC, they carry about 70 people in mixed standing and sitting positions, the floor is raised because all the engine parts are under the floor, this makes entry for disabled and old people rather difficult or impossible.

these are the newer buses, 2 doors, the floor is lower so entry is easier, it has a retractable ramp and a wide door in the back door that helps people in wheel chair enter, automatic shifts, automatic emergency blinkers that go on when it is stopped at a bus stop to alert other drivers, more economic engine, it uses adblue and other things that reduces amazingly the amount of pollution it makes, you almost cant see the smoke from the exhaust, the chairs on the back part are in a slope because that is where the engine parts are located, they also have LED rear lights and indicators.

all of the buses are connected to an ad-hoc network that lets them communicate and authenticate tickets and passes, all tickets and passes are electronic and rechargeable, they work via RFID technology, the buses also have GPS.

You won't see them in the Eastern US only West of Chicago. Too tall to go East from Chicago. Two full floors.

Hah, I've been on all of those (wife used to live in Brampton).

That's what the buses look like here. CAT stands for Collier Area Transit (Collier is the county the city is in). Unfortunately there's only a few routes so most people are not able to take advantage of the service. There are no passenger trains in the area.

i live in a town of 14000 people. walking from the very eastern edge of town to the very western edge takes ~35min, north to south is ~5min. we don't have mass transport.

Thames Valley trains (First Great Western)

From what i've figured after many long hours of waiting for a cow to clear the track, slippery rails so the train can't accelerate, late/delayed/cancelled trains, aircon carriages with broken ac (ie small open windows), price hikes, more price hikes; they're diesel shaft drives, an auto gearbox, each coach has an engine and a driven bogey. Driver sits at the front of a coach, and occasionally a ticket man comes round, only he won't sell tickets, he only inspects them and fines you if you didn't buy one before hand.
Like, in my case, my local branch has 4 stops, ticketed - platform only - platform only - ticketed, so they sometimes put a guy on the train. So when i get on at the platform only and go to the ticketed stop, there isn't a guy the buy my ticket from. So I change trains at the ticketed stop and buy my rtn ticket to go elsewhere from the machine (the only booth with a real person is closed / has a huge queue). I go to work, then come back and have to get to my local platform only stop. But my ticket is only valid to the ticketed stop as that's where i had to buy it. The booth is closed (closes at 1pm!!), the train leaves in 4 mins. To buy a new ticket to get home (1 stop!) costs £2.50, to get my ticket extended costs.......£0!!!! so FGW are forcing me to buy an unnecessary ticket, or argue with the bloke who can't speak english to please extend my ticket without a £20 fine. /rant

I am proud to say that I live in the city with the best public transport in Europe (according to the European Central of Transportation). We have a huge net of Trams, Buses, Metro (Subway) and Trains to serve the Helsinki Metropolitan Area with 1.5mil inhabitants.

We have 9 different Tram lines for the city center.

    Old style
    [IMG]

    New style
    [IMG]

    Over 100 bus lines
    [IMG]

    2 Metro lines
    [IMG]

    and 12 Train lines
    [IMG]

Another Metro line is under construction to connect the neighbor city of Espoo to us and a Citytunnel is also under construction to make the center car free. You can get basically everywhere, anytime in the city and it costs 2,2€ for one time or 41€ for the whole month. Students pay 21€ a month. Night fares are 4€ after 2 o`clock and buses run all night.

I dont have a car nor a driver license and dont need one ether. Public transport is cheap, reliable and always on time.

I can imagine these will look familiar to most people on here:

First Group Wright Crusader (Volvo B6BLE), the most common model on my route. Er...that's all I know about it really. A return from my town to Bristol (~20miles each way) costs around £6.50 :grr:

If I'm unlucky (which is usually the case around rush hour) we'll have one of these:

Plaxton Verde (Dennis Lance). One of these caught fire while I was on it earlier this year, leaving the ~40 passengers to cram on to the next bus with the ~40 people already on there.

Or worse still one of these:

Plaxton Pointer (Dennis Dart). Which is just a joke really.
