    HDD Chaser

actually i'd like to request something.
a 16 LED HDD activity fader/chaser. the more active the hard drive is, the faster it moves. i know there was something kind of similar on metku, but i couldnt figure out how to adapt it for this. i'd prefer something not software based, but rather be driven by its own circuit tied into the mobo HDD light bus.

    either in standard chaser:

    or knight rider!

    thanks!

HELP: Circuit for HDD power and activity lights

I'm building a modded computer for my son's fifth birthday. I plan on adding a l lighted window to one of the RAID drives AND to the CD-RW/DVD combo drive. Since I want the lights for both my HDD and the combo drive to be independent, I can't link the two by their pin 39's and switch one circuit. So I'll have to build two identical circuits using their individual pin 39's as switches. (I'm not sure if CD drives use pin 39 like HDDs, so I may have to use the CD drive front LED as a switch instead).

The big picture for this project is to get my son interested in computers and to teach them how they work. He'll get to see inside the case (every side of this case is windowed) and watch the CD spinning and the HDD writing. This is a project that I hope will educate him and spark his imagination for years to come.

The case came with cool blue lighting. I'd like to use a circuit with an optoisolater that is controlled by an input from pin 39. The optoisolator should protect the device and the motherboard. Each circuit should control two red and two blue LEDs. The blue color for power (to match the rest of the case) and red for drive activity.

I found two tutorials so far. THIS ONE is the closest to what I want, but is uses the MB pin header instead of pin 39, and it seems complicated to me. I'm going to have to find a way to measure the voltage and amps coming off of pin 39 before I try to modify that circuit. THIS ONE uses pin 39 from a HDD, but they seemed to have some trouble with it and it needed a modification which was poorly explained.

What do you think? Can you help me design the right circuit?

well, to really clean a psu youd have to open the casing and use a compressed air duster to get all the dust out. I bet just taking a duster and spraying it in through the fan or in the vent slits would get a fair amount of dust out.

I have an idea for a guide.

Someone should write a guide on how to make an attractive and easy to read project log. I'm sure that would help many people to write their logs much better.
