Yes, if someone is set out to vote for his friend, then all he has to do is look up which photo it is. My point is that having people look only at the images while voting helps to reinforce the idea that we should be voting on the photo that best fits the theme, not the photographer that took the best photo.

It may seem like a semantic issue, but it's an important distiction to me.

You can't stop people from voting for their friends but as long as you get enough voters it doesn't really matter. A link on the frontpage to the POTM poll would do the trick.

    Either way works for me.

I'm just happy this forum was created, pretty much because of this I have developed a new interest I didn't have before, and I'm now considering a move into dSLR at some point.

    Ditto.

Even though I have not put in an entry this month I would be happy to go with the majority.

Going away this weekend too and guaranteed to get some really good architectural snaps :(

I agree with supermonkey, it is semantics but an important distinction none-the-less.

Over time, people may associate XX with great photos and so always vote for XX regardless whether there is a better photo posted by YY, but because YY isn't as consistent with producing great shots as XX, he doesn't get a look when when he does.

(i see this on flickr sometimes... there are people that post great shots a majority of the time, but every now and then something absolutely mediocre at best is posted and everyone still raves on about it... sometimes even commenting on the 'meaning' of the shot where it's obvious it was just random!)

I've put a gallery together (read: bodged) for quick viewage to save people trawling through threads.

    http://photocomp.webshaped.com

I went through the threads in this forum and copied image URLs though I might've missed some so please check your own page at some point to make sure your photos are seen.

Voting thread will be going up quite soon. :thumb:

Ninja-edit: Next month I'm going to have fleshed out the site at the above link to involve voting and shizzle so I'll probably make the site not explicitly display names.

hey Nath, you got to teach me how to code your site sometime, i need help with my own :) (how do you do the /?id=2 ? is it php or database stuff?)

And looking through, I have my distinct favourites.. three of them, all by different people but choosing one to be a winner is difficult! Great standard of entries for a first compo, i'm jealous of the talent all of you guys possess! :thumb:

All of the links simply point to http://photocomp.webshaped.com/?id=x which is essentially http://photocomp.webshaped.com/index.php?id=x, and passes the value of x to the script. This is accessed by using $_GET['id'] in this case, and then the script just gets the right photos from an array. This particular page doesn't use a database, the URLs of everyone's photos are just loaded into an array. :thumb:

Thanks Sam0r, but that's not necessary any more, just spent the last two nights coding my site and i'm quite proud of it to say so myself :D

What I did was to cannibalise and work it out myself.

I'm really good at stuff like that (that's probably how I got through uni!) I don't need to understand how or why something works... just give me an example and a working context and i'll build the Taj Mahal from it (given enough time!)

That doesn't mean it's going to be the best, the quickest, or even the nicest looking code, but it'll work! ;)

Check out mine, feel free to delve into the source code and point me to any errors or changes that are necessary.. I've already been to the W3C validator and I have many errors  but i've no idea why as it looks and works OK for me

Validation doesn't particularly refer to how a site looks or works; it's whether the code complies with W3C web standards. The more a site complies with these standards, the more likely it is to work the same in the more standards-compliant browsers. Still, it's good practice to keep to webstandards anyway.

Updated/rewritten the rules to actually be correct. Silliness averted. :worried:

Just so people know, the format for entry dating is [MM/YY], not [DD/YY]. It makes it much easier for us to mass-move and archive them if you format it this way. Thanks.

Not quite sure to be honest, maybe because the POTM rules are changing slightly, what with last month's forumite-voting thread etc.

Or because somebody forgot to sticky it after the forums were shuffled around :worried:
