I got some netgear switchs off of ebay that had no power adapters (it was 10 dollars for 3 4 port DS104 and 1 16 port switch). I thought i could just use some of those wall mount molex setups from mod stores but i ran into something i didnt think of. THe back of the 4 port switchs says 12 VDC and 1.2A. Now ive seen people install switchs in a computer before so i thought the molex to wall setup would work but then I saw 1.2A does it mean anything. I dont want to wire it up then fry it. To sum things up can i use a power supply to power a switch that has power reguirments of 12vdc and 1.2a. I have no electrical experience other then rewireing so hey.
welll... dont over complicate things, first to clarify you need to use a simple formula (Volts)*(Amps) = (Watts), so basically in your case its (12v)*(1.2a) = 14.4 watts.... which is no bigge for just about any psu, so i dont see any reason you couldnt power it off ur computer, or probably any external 12v power adaptor that is rated for 1ish amps...., hope this helps
The adaptors are common enough over here, so I think you'll find the same in the USA. Here's a Uniross regulated brick with 12V, 1200mA max. = 1.2A max. that would do. May cost more than the $10 switch, though. Or you can supply one from your PC psu molex 12V if it's not being stretched.
can get them for like $10 or £5 if you look around enough, or make one easily enough... if u want to test just hook up the yellow n black from a molex in your pc to it. (polarity sensitive - get it the right way round)
