One of these has just been donated to me Anway, problem is when it boots it gets past the 'loading mac os x' window and then it just goes into a blue sreen and sits there, nothing else happens, i dont have any recovery disks or anything like that although it wudn't matter if i did becuz the disk drive wont eject anyway Any of you guys got any suggestions of what i shud do? Thanks seebul
ill take it!! really... but try replacing the disc drive, then loading any install discs from any mac and just do a restore install...
Try booting into verbose mode or single user mode. I can't remeber the shortcuts but have a google and you'll soon find out . I was able to recover my crashing Mac mini from when I installed a dodgy ADSL modem driver by doing the single user mode boot. Hope that helps, and have fun with your new toy BTW what version of OS X is it? Tiger is worth the upgrade if you don't have it (especially if it's pre-Panther (10.3) but that's unlikely). If all else fails stick a PC inside, if you could sleep at night knowing what you've done, that is
lol. Cant eject the drive at all, even so the only disk i have is for my ibook, that wudn't work in it. nothing yeh it is pre tiger definetly, not sure which one it is though, and the single user mode thing, comes up as a sort of DOS looking code thing, what do i do now? cheers for all the suggestions guys, keep em coming
Verbose mode will show the UNIX prompt thingy, but I'm not too sure what I did, sorry. [OT] How's the iBook? I might be getting a 12" almost-new refurb soon [/OT]
yeh its really good, if you like macs you definetly shud get one, make sure you get plenty of ram though mine came with 512 and it just wasn't enough I was just thinking, if i plug a spare cd rom drive in tht HAS an eject buton on it, could i use it to boot from cd? i managed to get hold of some kind of powermac disk.
the ibook discs will work. and you dont need to eject the drive to replace it. or maybe pull the front drive cover off so you can access the drive eject button. but seriously, ill take it!
lol i think ll hold onto it there is no eject button on the cd rom drive, that is why i cant open it, there is just a hole where the button wud be.... thats is where the eject button shud be.... but of course cos its a mac, they have gotten rid of it. sorry for unclear pics, phone camera.
I cant remeber if this applies to the G4 towers, but I think they use standard IDE components, you could pick up a cheap one at your local computer retailer.
Have you tried opening the case and taking out the CD drive and removing the bezel etc? There could be, although I'm not sure, a way to open it like standard PC ones with the paperclip. I remember when the iMac G4 was brand new, a guy I saw "swallowed" his disk so he had to take it to the repair centre! But with the PowerMac being a tower it is worth a quick look inside to check for any other possibilites. If I find any info on the verbose or single-user mode I'll post here straight away .
Hey guys, i managed to get the cd drive open with a little bit of brute force Put my disc in tht didn't work the ibook ones wont work with it either, so im gonna go to the apple store afta skool 2moro and pick up a copy of tiger Hopefully it will all work fingers crossed. Thanks very much for all your help guys greatly appreciated
Did it say something like "this disc is not for this computer"?? Because apple only lets the bundled disc run on the computer it came with. Have fun with Tiger, hope it installs OK, you'll become so used to spotlight it's great
btw, to eject CD media, hold down the mouse button as you tur the computer on. also, to get the system to boot from CD, you need to hold down C as you turn the system on. or you can hold down alt (the 'option' key) instead to see a list of all boot options. link of all startup combos (single user mode is handy - think of it as windows' recovery terminal, but a LOT more useful): http://www.jacsoft.co.nz/Tech_Notes/Mac_Keys.htm
Any idea of the specs? Those things are noisey (trust me ) If it chimes and boots, then it just needs a restore. You can't usually eject the drive unless its fully booted. Try holding down the ALT key while you turn it on, that'll get you into the open firmware boot prompt, and from there you should be able to eject the DVD drive and boot from a tiger install DVD. You can't use the DVD's from your iBook.
hey guys, didn't get tiger in the end cause its 80 quid and i found out my mate had one of these so i went and got the disks after school All up and running now, its pretty quick, way way way quicker than my ibook! Hybr1d: yeh thats exactly what it said, it wudn't let me use my ibook ones. Sam0r: the specs are: Its not too noisy sam0r, gets rather hot tho!! Thanks for all your help guys.
Holy **** dude. You got that for free?! /me bows. I payed 480 quid for mine + a 17" Apple TFT. Get Tiger on there ASAP though mate, its bundles faster, and better than Jaguar (10.2)
Tasty! I'm sick of my iMac's OS 10.1 (Puma), there were practically no OS X users before Jaguar! I should be getting an Intel iBook in late July/early August. But anyways get another stick of 512mb RAM, stick Tiger and iLife '06 on there and you'll be having great fun! How long have you been using Macs btw?
yeh, it was my uncles but now mine he would rather just get a new one than try and get it repaired And yeh im gonna ger tiger running on it pretty soon hopefully.
