My power supply cannot reach my video card even with the molex to pci adapter. I have another psu sitting around and at this point it would just be easier if I can use the extra psu to power the video card. Is there any problem with doing this? There wouldn't be any other components plugged in.
just extend the wires, shouldn't be too hard (cut, solder, tape, done) , an extra power supply will only clutter your case, and you would have to do some mods to it anyways to it will boot up with the rest of your hardware.
Don't own a soldering iron, nor do I have any experience with one. I'm college so more clutter doesn't really make much of a difference.
you can buy extensions for your PSU that will save you a lot of hassle.. Two PSUs can really be a pita. its one thing to use a separate one for lights and water cooling and stuff, but when its components, you really want the mobo to be able to have control over your PSU. i would see if you cant get ahold of your local computer store, or even make friends with your campus computer group and see if you cant just get a cable... trust me, its a lot easier. http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/searchdetail.asp?productID=326 they are like <$2 and are 12" long.
If you wanna use a psu just for the gfx card you need to short out the black wires on the 20 pin molex and the two black wires on the 4 pin motherboard molex
