Title should give you an idea, but here's some details:

My friend's computer (I'm using it right now) has a 3.4GHz Prescott P4 with Hyperthreading. Even today it's pretty nippy, but I was considering upgrading the processor for him now while the LGA775 socket is still alive.

Is it safe/possible to upgrade this processor to any other LGA775 part?

The PSU is rated at 116W, but I'm sure that since the TDP of a Prescott is about 100W, and the Wolfdale is about 95W, that shouldn't be a problem.

Depends on whether the motherboard supports Wolfdales. Some of the older socket 775 boards don't. Some don't unless you upgrade the BIOS.

    What motherboard is it?

Also, the rating of the PSU does not directly correlate to the TDP of the CPU. The PSU has to power a lot more than the CPU.

    love it.

p4 were never nippy they were slow and hot. 775 died a while back too even though you can still get parts, no more 775 CPUs are been produced.

that aside - PSU rated at 116W ?

Also as above not all 775 boards support newer (but still old) core 2 stuff. What is your motherboard make and model ?

Yes, I know that about the PSU! But it's a very simple office machine with little more than memory, HDD and DVD ROM installed, so the wattage on top of the CPU is probably around 10-12W.

"Intel Desktop Board D915GU/D915PCM/D915GHA" is what the motherboard says.

If this is it: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d915pcm/sb/CS-026951.htm then I guess I'm out of luck. :(:grr:

Edit: bagpuss, the hyperthreading makes a tonne of difference over other P4s I've used, I was very surprised that it can multitask! Also, scan are still selling Core 2 stock, so I'm guessing the socket is still alive yet.

Download CPU-Z and run it on the PC, this will tell you exactly which motherboard chipset you have. Sometimes the stickers on the board don't help much.

That said, it that link is in fact the one for your m/b then you are out of luck I'm afraid.

CPU-Z says it's either i915P or i915G. Neither keyword bings or googles well.

775 socket is still alive, we still sell C2D E5400s almost every day in my local computer shop.

Fair enough, I guess I'll leave it as it is as it's got pretty much the most powerful CPU the motherboard supports anyway. Thanks for the help.
