wow, i feel so old now. when i was at school, smoking weed was 'hardcore'. i guess it shows how times have changed.

interesting article, and i do find it disturbing that two in five kids would say pills are 'much safer', jut because they are prescription meds.

Prescribed drugs can be worse than illegal drugs due to side effects.

The thought that comes to mind on this article is "kids want to get high". If we accept that as truth for a moment, and accept that if they want it, they are going to find a way to get it, then the next question is "Should there be a safer alternative?". What we're seeing here (IMHO) is partially the result of the educaion efforts tha have been going on in schools for years now. Kids realize that drugs, espcially street drugs, can be dangerous and are looking for a safer way to get high. They percieve Marijuana, ecstacy and prescription drugs as being safer alternatives to cocaine and heroin. While flawed, this though process is encouraging.

I guess my point is that kids want to get high, they're going to find was to get high, and maybe a safer high is worth looking into.

While I totally agree Cthippo, actually looking into ways to do that just isn't going to happen. It's like pretending porn isn't on the internet because we haven't ushered it into a .xxx TLD - by doing so, we acknowledge that there is a "problem". Of course, having some rational people in government could go a long way, but that's also wishful thinking.

Researching a safer high is not only losing the war on drugs, but advocating their use. Or so the high-ups see it. It's really just propoganda.

Stupid kids. Do they not realise that certain medications cannot be used together because of serious side affects, hence a trail mix is inherently dangerous. What a bunch of idiots.

I'm inclined to believe it's more "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". They see all 'drugs' as substances that give you a buzz, whether they're laxatives or heroin, I mean, they're sold in drug stores, no? Obviously (to their mind) you may have to take more of some sorts because they're weaker, the power of the urban myth then takes over.

If they could spell 'pharmaceuticals' these things wouldn't happen. :sigh:

Is it surprising? The culture we live in brands certain drugs as safe and certain drugs(the illegal ones) as dangerous. As Cpemma says, many people don't understand that although what they're taking is legally available on prescription, and gives a high, it's basicly the same stuff as heroin.

People taking speed, well, I doubt that that's anything new. Taking them when they're called Amphetamines makes no real difference, speed is speed. In a culture that uses speed to bring military pilots straight to attention and ready to go(they're called "go" pills), and uses another powerfull drug(things like tamazapam) to calm the pilots down when they return("no go" pills), is it any wonder that people feel that certain things are reasonably safe, and are great tools for assisting learning or fun?

I guess this is different, only in the extent of ease of availability of things like Ritalin and other ADHD drugs. They're so overprescribed(imo) that the availability of them has skyrocketed. Maybe all that's really needed to calm this is higher standards of Doctors?

Exactly right with the "safeness" of perscription drugs being exagerated compared to narcotics. Although it would seem that Vicodin or other pain killers have all the benefits of getting high with no negative aftereffects as they would have people beleive.

My family went through a string of surgeries, minor to big. But we had a whole stockpile of drugs after all that, in a totally open cabinet. There is no mystery where it is coming from

Hopefully Darwin will catch up to them and they'll remove themselves from our gene pool.

Honestly, people who do things like that deserve to die.

Many of them won't die though. The drugs they're taking won't instantly kill, many many people will be using these sorts of things on a recreational basis, then they'll stop one day, and they'll live the rest of their lives as normal.

Just because they're doing drugs, they don't deserve to die. They leave behind families just the same as you and me.

I've known of weed parties and raves with extacy, a few shroom parties, but never any pharm parties. I guess the next "cool" thing will be a herion party.
