Hello everyone! I have NTL broadband and I am sharing it with two other computers. We have made one of them a server which is connected directly to the internet. We have set up a LAN and use ICS . There is no problem in web browsing, e-mailing, chating in irc, but there is a problem when I try to send files via dcc. Sending files over MSN Messenger does not work either. Neither does Netmeeting. Receiving files is not a problem. Also, the server computer can send files via dcc. It's just the clients that cannot. Are there any special settings that I have not done? Is there some sort of program I could download to resolve this matter? Any help would be apreciated All three computers use Windows XP and we have set up the LAN by using 2 ethernet cards on the server pc and used "Set up home or small office network" wizard. Thanks in advance... Take care
You need to tell the 'clients' to use a proxy to use these things. There is almost always a setting in the program for this e.g. MSN IM ->go to tools, options then connection. because its ICS i can't tell you the settings because i don't use it but it may tell you if you look
things like the messenger files can also be stopped by firewalls. so either disable it when you want to send or send files with emails.
I've got the same problem with ICS. The server machine is acting like a firewall (or so I think it is) and whatever other computer out there trying to connect only will see the IP of the server machine, not any of the internal client machines. The only workaround I found was to connect with the server. Not really a workaround at all but that's what I have to do.
Exactly... It's not that I do not have internet connection at all. I mean MSN Messenger works just fine in chatting and receiving files. Same with mIRC, ICQ. Tried setting up a proxy and did not work... It is weird though, cause I can receive files just fine... I can't send them. (sending files via e-mail though works just fine) It's like there is a firewall, though I have not installed one... Anyway, thank you all for taking the time to reply to this... Take care...
Well, as I mentioned earlier I am subscribed to NTL broadband... The modem is in the box that is used to watch cable TV. It is not a router... Anyway, the modem is not a problem, since the server pc has no restrictions on sending files, using netmeeting etc... It's just the clients that use the server's internet connection that have the problem...
Swan - have you considered using something like Winroute pro rather than ICS? One of the problems with ICS is that because it's a proxy rather than a router, it needs a fairly complete understanding of an application before it can pass the traffic through. A router is lower down in the heirarchy of networking and doesn't need the same level of understanding about the applications running over it. Just a suggestion. Kata
