Just got a new 6870 to replace my ageing 4850. I've uninstalled the software and removed the 4850. I've then installed the 6870 card, the fan powers up but I can't get any picture. I have reseated the card a couple of times with no result. I have then reinstalled my old 4850 and the monitor works fine. I'm not stuck as what to do next...

firstly did you connect both 6 pin power connectors? also whats your PSU? if you have connected the power then im afraid to say it seems like you have a dud card. Did you buy it from a retailer if so just send it back as faulty.

I have only got one 6pin, did ask on another forum and was told i would need on for this graphics card. I'm assuming that this isnt the case then......

Try using the 2x Molex to 6 Pin adaptor. It is usually supplied with a new card.

If the card has 2 power connectors, you plug them both in, just like you would pretty much any other component....

And it's just a cable which requires two molex plugs input and outputs a 6pin.

You said there was only one 6pin on your PSU - if the card has 2, you'll need the cable. But before you end up blowing your PC up, what PSU do you have, and what are the 12v amps?

you will need to connect both 6 pin power connectors as far as im aware all 6870's have 2 6 pin power connections, but as i said we need to know your PSU make and wattage as you could end up putting too much load on your PSU and it could go pop

Ok rather than go down the adaptor route I was thinking of changing the PSU. I've only got a generic one at the moment. Budgets a bit limited after buying the GPU so was considering this http://www.ebuyer.com/190751-be-quiet-530w-pure-power-psu-bn106 . I will not be going crossfire anytime in the forseeable future (not until I upgrade mobo and processor anyways) so this looks to be a good choice for my budget. Any thoughts appreciated.

    Great little PSU.

I have one powering my main PC (see sig). The only downside it has is a lack of cable braiding.

Good choice and a good price. This is definitely the answer to your problem.

Excellent thanks for that, I thought it looked to be a good option so I have gone ahead and ordered it.

All sorted now, the Be Quiet PSU certainly lives up to its name. Now I need to see what the graphics card is capable off. Not going to get the best from it til I upgrade the monitor but a quick run on BFBC2 shows a definate improvement. On a side note the benchmarking test is actually worse than with the 4850 which doesn't seem right to me.

Excellent, glad the PSU is working for you. You shouldn't have any issues pushing that HD6870 on it either.

The benchmarking test (which one?) may be CPU limited and thus increasing your GPU performance won't help in that scenario (in fact it might make it worse).

What are the rest of your computer specs?

TBH though if you are seeing decent gains in the games you play I wouldn't worry too much about "synthetic" benchmarks.

Thats what I was looking to do next. Im assuming I can use the overdrive thingy in catylst control centre to do this?

I'm not bothered about the benchmarking to be honest, just though I would try it and see what happened :hehe:

Use MSI afterburner not the CCC. It can also control the Fan speed, monitor temps and allow voltage adjustments, all in one easy to use package.
