Hey guys, I have WD passport HDD. Its been working fine but two days ago it started clicking but then it stopped, how windows recognizes it but it asks me to format it, as no file system appears to be on Is there anyway to recover data /fix it?
Oh, a friend had the same problem.. he cracked open the case, took the HDD plug-it onto the computer, and back all it's data. The WD passport circuit board that does the SATA to USB conversion seamed to be broken. Check if it under warranty, and call Western Digital for RMA, else, you can try like my friend did, however I would suggest to do a repair disk check FIRST, just in case it's some error. To do this simply right-click onto the drive, select "Properties". A panel will open, from there, go to the "Tools" tab, and click on the "Check Now..." button. Another panel will appear, check both boxes, and click on Start. Wait until the process is completed, eject the device from "Safely remove device", unplug it. And plug-it back and see if it helps.
Damn, just my fancy post, Point: It happens alot with the early WD Bus powered drives, Get yourself some "GetDataBack NTFS" (FAT32) run that to recover your data, will rebuild your file system. Failing that, remove the drive from the case and connect to your onboard sata and do the same.
I get the same thing with my WD 120 all the time. it will click to no end, but it works. Personally I would just plug it into the computer and go from there, or get a Sata or ide to usb converter, as WD's are normally faulty. RMA it if under warranty.
After running GetDataBack NTFS, I got GetDataBack FAT and i think I got all my data back, well at least all my movies are working!!!DD Now im looking to get extra Hard Drive to buy to copy stuff to
I suggest eSATA/USB enclosures. The only I like a lot and cheap, is the Vantec NexStar3 USB/eSATA enclosure for SATA HDD. I think you have Black and blue color. I have teh Black one it's very nice, it's an allumium enclosure well painted, comes with everything (except the HDD of course) - eSATA cable - Power adapter - USB cable - SATA to eSATA converter for desktop PCs (so that you have a eSATA plug on teh back of your computer if you don't have one) - vertical stand. The only downside is that the vertical stand has no padding, but that is easy to add and ridiculously cheap.. and that is IF you want to put it vertically. The butty of eSATA is that you have the same speed as if the HDD was internal. In addition you have USB for system that doesn't have eSATA. It uses normal desktop HDD's so it needs a power adapter. Also, eSATA has no power sent through it to power a device. The cool thing with HDD enclosures is that you pick the HDD YOU want, it's peace of cake to assemble, and you save money.
Few models models: - http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/374 - http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/354 (USB/Firewire a/b /eSATA) - http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/212 (USB/eSATA) - That is the one I have, the others where not available when I got mine. All of the above model has been tested for 2TB HDD via the USB, company says that there is no drive capacity limit on any model, this is just what they tested and ensure that it works.
