Which service pack are you running? Vanilla, SP1, SP2, SP3?

Run services.msc from Start>Run. Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Automatic Update services. Then delete the Software Distribution folder in c:/windows. Go into Internet Options in the Control Panel and select the Security tab. Add the following sites to the Trusted Sites list (by clicking on the Sites button):

    http://*.update.microsoft.com
    https://*.update.microsoft.com
    http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

OK it and close Control Panel, then try doing an update again.

This is a very basic fix for the most common problem I've found. It may not work.

The first result in Google brought this page up: http://www.updatexp.com/windows-update-errors.html - may very well help you.

Nope, you just can't install any other than critical hotfixes. This is at least in Vista and XPSP3, dunno about XPSP2.
