I Zipped up a load of my old financial information some time back and password protected the Zip file for securitys sake.

Now like the fool I am I can't remember the password and really need to get it open asap. Is there anyway around the passwords or any decent password crakers for WinZip? Or am I just stuck?

Any help greatfully accepted - Cheers

The results in google just give me loads of crappy porn and warez popups, which being at work is not a good thing.

Try passware, I've used their Zip Key cracker to open a locked Zip file in the past. Also got the same thing for Office, etc. It's a bit expensive though (may be able to get a demo?)

There are loads of hits that claim to be but following them lead to an intensive session of window closing...

To be honest, your chances might be nil unless you've got an awful lot of time on yr hands - i had (only a short) password that i forgot went with a zip file. Every password retriever program i had was running for well over 3 days before i gave up.

Maybe there's a way to crack them - not that discussions about things like that should carry on here :naughty:

Time to surf IRC for help methinks....

I guess so but it is my file - I just forgot the password and there's nothing wrong with doing that at the end of the day. Even if the topic of 'cracking' in general is frowned upon.

Thanks for the pointers guys... there are a couple of decent looking tools around but the better looking ones seem pretty expensive.

    The search continues...

Obviously posting links to warez sites would be frowned upon and may end up with someone banned, but there are enough legitimate companies out there who offer password recovery services, so I don't know why discussing breaking the password on a zip file is a bad subject. It's no different to needing to reset the Administrator password on a Windows NT/2000/XP machine.

The Passware Kit recommended by trigger is a good package, I'd check it out.
Another company worth checking out is ElcomSoft, they have recovery programs for pretty much everything.

    Good luck!

If you need a good password cracker, use LC4 from @Stake. Otherwise you might have to use a distro of linux and hack your way to the password. I've had to do that before, it's a mother. Anyway, that should do a good brute force attack and give you all the passwords for just about everything.
