    Hi Guys,

This is my first post on Bit-Tech with luck I have put this post in the correct forum.

A week ago my Son had problems with his computer and as a result I ended up buying him a new case, motherboard, memory, cooler and CPU. I also changed his HDD for one I had in the loft.

I managed to install the new kit, XP home edition and Dawn of war. All was well for a day and then he tried to load an add on to dawn of war and he kept getting missing .dll file errors. I unsinstalled the games and could not then install the original game for the same problem.

I then tried a complete fdisk and reformat but found that I was getting unable to copy file errors at around the 75% install point. It suggested that there may be a problem with my copy of XP home edition. I have 3 copies (one for myself Son and daughter) one with service pack 2 and the other 2 at service pack 3. I tried each one and got the same problem.

I am considering buying a new Harddrive but am not sure if this is the most likely problem.
Can anyone give me some advice on what to do or what could be causing this problem.

    Thanks Mark :eyebrow:

    Welcome to the forums.

Check the optical drive & cable. I had a similar issue years ago that turned out to be a bad IDE cable.

Thank you for the reply Saspro,

I had two PATA drives in my Son's machine and I had swapped over the ribbon cable this morning and had also tried to load XP using both of the drives. However after reading your mail I thought it would be worth replacing them with a SATA drive, so I went out and bought one.

Surprise Surprise all is now fine. I did not think I would have a problem with both DVD drives but it does now mean that after not quite 2 years I have replaced everything in the machine I bought from PC Specialists (including the case) bar the floppy disk drive.

Its what drove me to building my own machine last year and I can not see myself going back to pre built machines again.

Thanks again for your help Saspro and a happy Christmas to you :D
