i recently read that processors default to 1 ghz or somthing, i bought a 1.4 tbird a while back and noticed that it was clocking at 1 ghz, i always figured i just got ripped off but is there a way i can check the speed of the processor on the actual thing, not with software? i dont want to accidentally overclock a 1 ghz to 1.4 without any precautions.

check that the fsb is at 133mhz and not at 100mhz :)

you can change it in the bios :)

motherboard monitor 5 can tell you the speed of your cpu. Also what mobo have you got as it might not support chips above 1ghz if it is an older one. If this is the case try updating the bios.

Also check your manual. Some boards actually use a jumper to switch from 100 to 133 FSB!
