    Mm k, well..

I'm looking for some new music to really chill out too, nothing upbeat at all, just really, really mellow. Something that makes you feel like your floating off into space, or swimming around with brightly coloured electric fish when you close your eyes (drugs not included.)

So far I've been listening to:

    Pink Floyd's 80's stuff
    Enigma
    Jean-Michel Jarre
    Some Clannad
    Some Enya
also a little Mike Oldfield, but don't like him all too much.

Don't get me wrong by these, i'm metal as fook, but just at night when everyones asleep, i need something to chill me down :baby: and i've found that this kindah music really does the trick!

So any suggestions at all? pretty weird request I know :p

Can't go wrong with Clannad. Or Enya (especially considering the fact that Enya is part of the Clannad family). Maire (Clannad's lead singer) also has a solo album which I think is a little closer to Enya's works than the typical Clannad fare.

If you're looking for really mellow sounds to help calm you down, I would also recommend Gregorian Chant (or any of the various chant flavors), or Chinese instrumental music.

Genesis pre-Gabriel leaving is a massive favourite of mine for this sort of purpose. A bit more upbeat than some of these choices, but no more lively than Floyd.

On the Jarre and Oldfield trip, Vangelis has some corking stuff along similar lines. The Bladerunner soundtrack is incredible, and conjours all sorts of visions.

Other soundtrack goodness could come from the likes of Cliff Martinez and his score for the Solaris soundtrack. Truly individual stuff and just right for snoozing too.

Something a little more modern? Try out anything by Zombi. Farty synth music, with really hypnotic pulsing beats and excellent drum/bass combo. Alternatively get a hold of the Ulver album 'Blood Inside' - very bizarre avant garde, proggy weirdness with a black metal heritage, not that you'd know it as it's all very gentle tbh. Or! How about getting some acoustic Alice In Chains? Jar Of Flies stuff would work I suspect.

    I could go on.

Some Doctor Who remixes are pretty mellow.

My sort of "chilling music", would be a fair amount of instrumentals, namely from Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle. Either that, or something that's just really epic. As far as "proggy" stuff goes, I can't really see alot of it being chill out music, but give Dream Theater's song "Octavarium" a go, it's 24 minutes long, so that's sure to chill you out a bit. I find some of the mellower Opeth songs to be pretty decent to chill out to. Or try some early Bauhaus.

Or, if you wan't a slight funky chill out session, listen to the almighty, The Doors

Nice guys, will give all these a listen to through the wonders of iTunes, and pick bits and bobs that i like and dont =)

@mookboy, i've heard some vangelis and I do quite like it =) will possibly buy the bladerunner OST later on, as I love the film too

@Plugin, already have all NIN albums, all APC albums, most of Dream Theatres albums inc the album Octavarium (love the intro for Octavarium(song)), and I also have every opeth album :D Something tells me our music taste could be somewhat similar :p

I'm guessing you're at least OK with Celtic music since you've listed Clannad and Enya. If so, you could also look into Daniel Kobialka's album "Celtic Quilt."

Kobialka is a great violinist, and that album is all Celtic-inspired instrumental music. It's almost entirely slow airs; nothing very fast at all. It makes for great "chilling out" music.

Not quite on the same line as this, but I find classical music can be very relaxing, something like Beethoven's 5th. Another one I find very relaxing, and entertaining, is Blue Jam - a legendary Chris Morris radio show which is basically surreal sketches with gentle music inbetween. It was broadcast on the BBC, but it's not been released, so it's technically free for download, have a look around on torrent sites + google, and you should find it. :thumb:
It's probably my favourite thing to listen to when I'm not feeling "metal".

Just bought the album "happy songs for happy people" from iTunes, jesus christ this is good stuff. talk about blatant false advertising though ;) i'm about as happy as i was after watching "21 grams" :sigh:

Very pretty, "Hunted by a freak" is my fave tune so far ^_^
