Ok MrBurritoman :thumb: Maybe you could butcher up that cable after you finish using it :D Anyway, I'm still intrested in the pinout for the cable.

At least MrBurritoMan’s XLR power cords are safer than what Zap had. No chance of an electrical shock.

    really how so?

oh and im still unpacking from my recent and sudden move. i have little or no idea what is in some of these boxes. :duh: i think i know where my multimeter is so i can probe those cables for you. however i am pretty sure that the pins are as follows:

XLR Jack:----3 prong american style power plug(looking straight at the pins)
    1------------right
    2------------left
    3------------center

[EDIT] Ok i went back and re-read Zapwizards post and i see what you are saying about the xlr Jacks. maybe he did that to prevent what you guys were complaining about because the way that he did that would prevent anyone from plugging that in to a mic jack. yeah i was aiming for the "not shocking myself so much" area :D [/EDIT]

Wow, just tumbled onto this log. Great project, love the fold down flat panel. Thought initially (I was reading latest to oldest) that the front panel was an original military panel...mind boggling that you created it from scratch. perfectly done!

[sacrilege]Do take some time away from modding to get those grades up, you don't want to lose the use of that great shop.[/sacrilege]

Where do you get a agp angle facing downwards? have a barebone mobo and want my card lying down, but not in at the cpu if you understand. in a normal case: down covering the pci's. URL?

here is the URL to the store where i got mine. they had some trouble with the descriptions of their products so be careful. however they are easy to deal with and agreed to replace the wrong part for free. :thumb: MyCableShop.com

Thanx. I looked into some other page an it was much cheaper. But I don't know... WTF is AGP vs. AGP pro? Is my 9700pro agp pro?

    Nice case btw.

AGP pro is a special form factor that most professional cards require like the 3DLABs Wild Cat series or some of the really extreme cards. all the pro slot does is provide an extra 20 pins for more power to the card. you can put a normal AGP card in to a pro slot however you cannot insert a pro card in to a normal AGP slot. more about this here. hope it helps. :D

    thanks every little bit helps.

i went looking for Keyboards and mice last night and i was needless to say kinda shocked at the selection of my local office supply store. they have next to no USB keyboards and the ones that they do have are REALLLY expensive. i don't really feel good about spending al lot of money on a KB only to attack it with my dremel. im going to go to PCClub next to see what i can find there, (NOTE: i will probably not buy anything in the store i just want to handle some different models to see what will work). again i want to spend no more then 40US on this. any suggestions or tips will be greatly appriceated. :thumb:

Damn, bad luck on the exile. Sweet looking case.

Just a thought regarding cables. On the electronic equipment I used in the army, when multple plugs had to be used - each (different function) was unique so dumbarse soldiers couldn't put the wrong plug in wrong hole and fry $1000s of comms and encryption gear. As you didn't say what was what on your front panel is your's like this or are you using the same connector for different purposes?

Also the multiple network plugs hanging loose look a little untidy. Why don't you put them in a tiny (green) box. Yes I see the ironry of you internally mounting a switch and me telling you put what effectively looks like a switch in front of the 83457.

yeah this was one of the things that i had to consider when i made this. the plugs that use USB are all interchangeable and specific to that function. the same goes for all the other plugs; you cannot plug something in where it is not supposed to go.

yeah those bother me too. i am thinking of using some alternative cabling that is less rigid. i managed to scrounge up some free cat6 cable at work and it has all sorts of reinforcements in it. also i would like to extend them a bit so they are not right infront of the panel. we shall see what i can dig up. i would really like to find some old cloth covered cable and mark it up and use that....hmmmm i also still need to find and customize a KB and mouse for this project.

living at home sucks because i really don't have any tools or money to mod much but i do it where i can.... we shall see what happens in the next month.

ok well not much has happened in the past month but things are looking better. i have some money to spend and here is where you guys come in. i am looking for a KB and mouse to buy and mod. i want to paint them and make them look all shot up and worn however there is one catch. i want to spend about 40US on this and i have found some possible solutions.

there is this memorex KB at work that is small and has lots of possibilities. i might go looking for one of those for myself however i like the appearance of the microsoft elite KBs. they are black, slim, and full of possibilities. also i am thinking of a microsoft optical mouse to complete the package. however if you guys spot anything better for the theme or a cheap deal please PLEASE post it here. i don't have all the time in the world to look at KBs & mice so any little bit helps. :thumb:

Oh, I like the way you have the update links in your first post, very nice. I'll be needing to copy that in my log (you don't mind do you?)!

Err...I don't have any suggestions for the mouse or KB.

well no thanks to you helpful people :D i have found a mouse kb combo set that i can mod. i was wondering around at ratshack today when i spotted this:

yeah yeah i know what you are thinking comcrap. well its a kb mouse set that is wireless and under 40US so i figured i couldn't loose. so not i must figure out what to make it look like. i know that i have to paint it olive drab anyway but how should i do it so i can preserve the silkscreened letters and numbers. any ideas? MOD ON! :thumb:

Kudos on the exceptional work so far fellow mormon. :thumb:

Do you have any plans for adding a lid for your ammo box so that you can seal it up when you take it with you to a LAN Party? Perhaps one that doubles as a mouse pad or keyboard tray would be useful.

As for the slim drive problem you were having, not all laptop drive are capable of using the Cable Select method of assigning Master/Slave relationships on IDE buses. As a precaution it's best to simply make a habit of putting the drive on the slave connection of the cable as default, or use a single device cable. I have had only a handful of slim drives that can use Cable Select.

For the keyboard, just leave the keys black and paint the rest olive drab. Possibly leave a black accent on the mouse as well.

yeah i use the lid that came with the ammo can for sealing it up when i am not using it. when i close the lid it still looks like a ammo can and nothing like a PC. :hip:

yeah, it took me a while to figure out what was going on with the laptop drive. it didn't have any jumpers or switches on the back so i just gave it its own channel on the IDE bus and it selected the master. so i have the HDD on one cable and the DVD/CDRW on the other cable. it works out quite well. thanks for the suggestion. :cooldude:

as for the kb/mouse thats what i was thinking about doing as well. now all i have to do is figure out how to make the paint more durable. the olive drab i have for the project is a laytex based paint and it has a really bad habbit of being extremely frail in the line of duty. i am thinking that i need to add a clear coat to the kb and mouse when i am done painting them. any other accents or things that you guys can think of for the kb/mouse. i want to add some rust spots and dings to it however i just want to make sure that we are not leaving out anything.

Latex paint probably won't accept a clear coat easily. You'll need to experiment on some test pieces of plastic.
I've always wanted to take a mouse to an automotive body shop to get it professionally painted to an automotive finish, but I don't know of very many places that stock olive drab as a paint color.

Have you tried finding it in a spray can?
