I'm back, with a new eye sore and me taking a crack at it. I really don't like the look of this drive bay and 12 of them together won't look any better.

    The victim.

Out with the tray, it will be moded.

Took out the tray grill, it will be replaced by mesh.

A closer look at the hole left in the ray, after removing the grill.

The mesh has been cut, to fit the hole.

First test, fit like a glove.

Mark a 1/8" flourecent green plexi, it will go behind the mesh.

    Some saw action.

Now I'm using the sander to straight and even the cuts.

    The plexi after been sanded.

Test fitting the plexi, behind the mesh.

First look at the plexi and mesh combo.

Decided to frost the front part, the side that goes behind the mesh.

The inside side won't be frosted. Those gaps in the middle of the plexi at the top and the bottom are for air intake.

Another look at the now frosted plexi and mesh combo.

Here you can see a before and after shot, I like the top version better.

Next I will install a LED in the back of the plexi to make it glow.

Now I continue with the soldering of a RES to the green LED, it will go behind the plexi.

Soldering the wire and adding the shrink tubing.

Some more soldering to the other LED lead.

LED has been solder and heatshrinked.

The final product, the LED has been reduced in size and frosted with a sander.

Taking out the molex pins on the tray Molex, to power the LED.

Already solder the LED wire leads to the molex pins.

The Molex connector, has been put back together.

Glued the wire and LED to the bottom of the tray.

Making sure that the HD and everything else fits properly.

Now the finish product, the tray is in the off position, no glow.

Now in the on position, glowing green.

I'm very happy with the results, thanks for watching :hehe:

Nice job on the front of the hot-swaps. Is that a green LED you are using? Would a UV give a better effect by making the green plastic glow from within. IIRC a green filter blocks out all light except green - so you'll get a very bright spot from a green LED as nearly ALL of it's light comes through (as your last image shows).

Just my thoughts - as you said, you are doing some unconventional things with this case.

Yes is a green LED, you are right a UV would have been better, but for some reason I like the bright spot in the middle and the softer look in the sides. Thanks everyone for your comments :thumb:

Here we go again, now this is my take on the " Turbine fan" mod. I'm using a cheap 120mm clear fan with no LEDs. I want to converted into a silver turbine fan with green leds, so lets begin.

    The victim :dremel:
First I took the label in the back of the fan to take it apart.
There in the middle you can see the white plastic washer, that holds the impeler.
Once removed, the impeler comes off.
I put some tape on the coils, to protect them from dust and some in the frame; to avoid scratches.
I have set up a stopper ( a piece of scrap plexi ), in my 4" table saw; to make easier the cutting of the fan frame.
Here you can see, the saw cutting the frame.
The frame has been cut in two, I will only use the bottom part.
Now, I use painter tape to mark, where I want to cut the PVC pipe.
Then is back to the mini table saw.
    Dry fitting the PVC pipe.
Now I painted with white Krylon Fusion, for plastics.

I'm using the Krylon as a primer, It really sticks to plastic and the final coat of paint should get a good grip on the Krylon. Next I will start on the impeler.

Back to work now in the impeler, first by removing the brand name label. I'm gonna cover the front of the blades, so they don't get painted.
Here's the impeler with all the blades covered.
Now, yes that is an easter egg, the most important part of this mod. :D
    [IMG]
I crack the egg in two and you can see, where one of the half goes.
I took the egg half off, and fliped the impeler upside down, so I can paint the back. I'm only painting the back, when the tape comes off; you will see the color of the paint; but the smooth clear surface of the plastic impeler in the front.
Turn the impeler upside down again and glue the egg half to it.
Then I spray paint the whole thing.
Here, I star peeling the tape off.
Final shot, with all the masking removed; smooth.
Next I will put the whole fan together and finished off.

After painting the PVC pipe, I drill holes for the LEDs.
Now the back of the frame, I don't like those RBY wires
    [IMG]
They are gone after some desoldering.
Replaced with some clear, silver and chrome pker wires. They are least noticeable.
Some more speaker wire strung with LEDs.
I gonna reuse the molex connetor.
The PVC pipe has been glued to the fan frame and the LEDs had been added.
The impeler has been placed inside the the PVC pipe/frame combo.
    The fan is finish.
Finally some pictures of the fan running.

I like the final results, isn't perfect but better that what I started with. The frame that holds the impeler was left clear, so kinda become invisible when the fan light up, you can see just a little hint of green. I was thinking in hidding some more the LEDs and wires but kinda of like the sticking out look. The glossy fan blades and the paint, really help reflect the light of the LEDs.

See ya at the next post , keep on modding

That fan looks pretty awesome :) Using an easter egg as spinner is something I've never seen before..

Thank you guys for your comments, I'm glad you guys like the easter egg " spinner " , I got the idea while shopping around for spinners. I needed 10+ spinners and the prices where outrageous, the easter eggs gave me the same look for a fraction of the cost. Now that I had build this fan I can figure out how much space, I need in the back of the case in either side, and where to build some access panels. The case is going to have 4 fans in the left side and 5 fans in the right side, at the rear of it all turbine style and green.

Some pics I forgot to post before.

Triying out a dozen HD bays, it have some space left  Now you guys can have an idea of the size of this monster case.

Back, first with an unrelated mod.

Got this horse as a gift for my daughter.
After some modding, a little white pony for my daughter.
Continue the work in the case with the cutting of a inside panel.
    First panel cut is, 28 5/8"x 9"x1/4".
This panel goes in the left side, it will hold the HDs bays. It is 9" deep, just enought to cover the side of the bays.
Added a second panel at the rear, leaving a 4" gap in between. This gap is gonna be cover by access panels, for cables, fans, etc. You can see a fan that I was using, to make sure I had enought space to access them and the HDs bays from the rear.
Now this is the right side indide panel, it will hold the fan controler and other stuff.
Also added another small panel at the rear, again I'm using a fan to test the spacing. The gap in between the front and rear panel is bigger, this will make it easy to install the radiators.
Cutting some 3/4" plexi to make a pair of raisers for the first drive bay.
Split the bar in two and presto, two raisers.
Raisers in position and glued to the case. They will raise the first bay, add strenght to the case and created a pocket under the first bay. :D
    [IMG]
Big 5" hole saw to drill the holes for the 120mm rear fans.
First hole is done, had to get a bigger drill, the cordless one suck for this type of job.
Four holes for the Hds bays fan in the left side.
Five holes for the radiators fans in the right side.
Bolted back on the rear panel of the case and added a hole in the bottom for the MOB tray.

Well that was a short update. I still had to build a lot of more dividers inside the case, to hold stuff. See you guys at the next post.

Today I started to build the panel that will complete the right side air box and support the radiators.

I had cut the panel down to size and made a template of the radiators in their position.
After marking the outline, I removed the template.
Some time later, I got the outline cut out.
I'm using a cut-out tool, attached it to my work bench upside down, to file and straight it the cuts.
Cutting some plexi to make the divider for the air box, it will go in between the two radiators.
The divider is now glued in place. It follows the shape at the rear of the case.
Now triying it out for size, it converts the rear space into two separated air boxes.
I took it out of the case, to install the radiators.
Back inside the case, you can see the position of both radiators. The side section of the air box is gonna be clear.
    Another view of the setup.

After asembling it and seen the space hehind the rads, I notice that " turbine fans " are gonna be crowded. They will fit but, I will try to come out with another design for the fans. Well see you at the next post.
