Its the weekend folks, time for an update, however its a small one due to several things. Heres basicly what I got done in the past 4 hours... At the start... I traced out the cdrom drive again, cut the aluminum cover, and cut where at the time I thought the light, headphone jack, and volume control were at... I was wrong later... Then I started on the drive and powersupply assemble. Two L brackets were mounted on the top, which allows the following drive rack to connect to. Works pretty well. The drive rack is just more 1/8inch aluminum stock, and thankfully I had several long screws for the drives. Here is the front somewhat put together to give a better idea, notice theres no more holes in the front, Ill fill that later. Now If you remember the powersupply, the case was removed, excess wiring removed, and hs fins bent. I used more angle braket to mount it onto the drive racks base. Theres plenty of room underneath, and with the fans will go, it will hopefully stay pretty cool. Somehow I was lucks and it was the same distance as the drives above... It all mounted together relativley simply using 6/32 screws and the excess of nuts I had.
Not I had origonaly though of using a different method of mounting the back plate, but due to my complications and my not thinking this out, I had to choose a different method. I came up with cutting the plexi the same width as the inside of the aluminum outer frame, and just sliping it in, and using 2 nuts to hold it on. This is also where the handle is used to remove the pannel, Now remember this is the primary access for the whole case, and will also not be seen. This worked out by using two angle brakets, mounted on the inside of the case using the same bolts that hold the plexi together. I then mounted the aluminum bar using 2 more 6/32 bolts and a 1/8th spacer, JB weld was used to secure the screws to hold the rear plexi and to reinforce the bar. I also started working on the back plate, there you can see the handle and power connector installed. Theres going to be alot of wiring done tommorow..... Heres the AWW CRAP part of todays update, it seems my filing snaped the thin plexi barrier between buttons and drive. Curiosity also got the better or me and I removed some of the paper... On to the little details. I wanted to see what I could do about the big holes where my buttons were at one point..... So more polished aluminum! Heres what the face will look like when done, hopefully.... As seen in the last picture I figured out what to do about the fan holes, one front on the left, on rear on the right. Since the fans will run at 7v and will provide cross airflow, I figured this works the best. You can also see the L bracket for the back support and mounting. Its waiting now....
G Gnome, I remember reading that, but i did not want to try and make the angles and mess with gluing. I dont know about lighting, as it will be sitting in a trunk... but 2x CC fans are being used anyways. Why am I only avg. rating I dont like ratings on my projects really, I mean its for fun, if people like it, they do, if they dont, no one should care.
wow that is a sweet looking cube! I built one awhile back u can check it out here if u want some ideas http://www.gruntville.com/casegallery/Minitranx The way you mounted your drives looks really sturdy! I have a question, how were you able to drill out your holes for mounting your drives? Like when you screw your drives onto the rails, how did you mark your holes? When I built my cube i had to use a see-through acrylic so i can kind of see where the holes are and i used that as a template. It wasn't accurate though! Anyways i think you're right about the rating. I think that ratings should only be given if its like a 4 or 5 star. If its a low rating, then i'd rather it not be there since majority of the projects don't get any anyways! But i think this deserves a 5 star anyways since it takes a lot more work to build a comp from scratch rather than modding a case that's already built for yoU! keep up the work!
I wouldn't worry about the ratings - someone decided early on to give my current project a '2' for whatever reason. But the other 52 people giving it 5 stars made up for it. It'll work out in the end as you'r mod takes shape and folks see the excellent work you've done. Also, only 1 in 100-1000 might vote on your mod which is hardly an accurate reflection of what people think. Just wait til you get all the rest of that paper off and polish up yer aluminum!
Only a little bit of work was done today due to a emergency call by some clients. (Had to build some $320 kicker boxes until their main machines can be fixed :-\) Basicly I ripped the case down, filed every edge, sanded the outfacing sides of the angles, and then clearcoated them for protection. After finishing the first set, I reassembled the top, and removed the paper cover... Looks good? This is the top with the bracing for the drives showing through. After then procceding to do the same process to the rest and reassembling the case..... It looks like this. I went to frys to get the grills but they were all out, so until next weekend! Spyder
great work! just one question: the psu is right under the hd, are you sure that it will not affect hd's correct functionality?
I can dig it Where'd you go about sourcing that blue plexi from? I need to source some for goliath in a few different smoked colors, but all I've found locally is clear 1/8"
I seem to have built something very similar... http://www.geocities.com/tknd_/index.htm But like the above poster, I'm looking for colored and/or neon plexi glass.
Slow weekend folks.... About got myself killed friday when my car lost control and slamned into a curb. It seems my heatercore is shot and the defrost dint work, and the water had to go somewhere, like into my legs through the heat vents.... Nothing like a 220f hot bath! Ended up being stranded at a friends party for Holloween which I really did not want to go to... Did make some progress however... Picked up these grills at frys for $5 each... ouch... Also picked up a bag of 1/2inch and 3/8inch wire rap at 20ft total. ended up wrapping everything I wanted to in about 20 minutes. While I had my Iron out to fix a fan connection in my dell, I figured what the hell, so I wired up the powersupply. Notice the quick discconects for wasy disassembly.
