This is my first case i will build from the ground up, and my first real mod( besides my premods and and other noob stuff). I just started it today, even though i have been scheming over it for a month now. The dimensions on it are 28"x19"x9" here's a sketch i did of it on CAD. the window on the side will be a flame cutout, but i'm not fimiliar enough w/ splines to do a good enough job at rendering it Here's the basic design of the side window. behind the fire will be plexi lit up by red and orange LED(more on that later) I am going to paint the fire so it wraps around the case and fades into black on the top this is a pic of my workbench. that bandsaw is a real modders tool I'm using 1" angle iron for the frame those are the 28" & 9" pieces cut and ground, ready for welding Here's the piece of Aluminum i picked up for the panels(thats me standing next to it and im 6'2" so thats a huge chunk of Alum) thats as much work as i could get done today because the blade on the bandsaw got dull and it was too late to get another. I also needed 90 degree angle clamps to clamp up the angle iron to weld it. Look for an update tomorrow night -glenn
First off...wow...sounds like a great idea and cant wait to see more. Second...please try getting those pics a little smaller third...that is one huge piece of aluminum. How much was it?
thanks, i'm getting the pics fixed as i type the aluminum sheet was $44USD and i got it from a local metal yard. it was supposed to be $55 but when the figured the price they forgot to add the $10 for cutting the sheet in half(score 1 for me) -glenn
looks like ur off to a good start... thats one huge piece of alu. how this is that alu. btw??? nice start, looking forward to more
the alum is 1/16" so its pretty thin, but the angle iron will make up most of the support what color do you think i should paint the inside? i was thinking a high gloss dark red thanks for the compliments and keep them coming -glenn
Oh it burns!..... Sweet idea! I can't wait to see what becoms of this! I will be watching this thread closely!
Yeah, you can pick up 1" Alu L-bar for super cheap from any hardware store. Very easy to cut too.. I have some pics of it on my project below.
yes i could have gotten alum angle iron, but it is hard to weld and since i am welding the frame up i figgered it would just be easier to use steel. bsodmike- yeah it is rusting already, but i will use a wire brush to clean all that off after i weld it and then prime it with a rust proof primer and nothing should rust ater that see'ing as it will be inside. still have tpo go and get the saw blade, but i should update tonight -glenn
what weight is the frame of the case? this is what im looking to do for my next case and im suroius about what to use, alu or steel, currently looking at alu as i cant weld it myself anyway so might as well go the lightweight option if the steel is gonna be seriously heavy
Wicked- wow i guess that is right, hmm there might be a market for aluminum iron, i'll check into that aand get back to you Phat ass- the steel for the frame is going to weigh in at about 15lbs, but if you are just going to get it welded by someone go w/ the alum as it is lighter and prettier(spelling) i didn't get any work done on my case because my parents said i had to do my homework which isn't due till Jan. but whatever, and then i went to my gf's house to watch a movie. i was able to pick up a cut off saw on the way home and the angle clamp so i'll be ready to go tomorrow. I spent the evening "practice" welding some scrap iron i had in our garage so i'll know what to dod tomorrow. -glenn
Update time. i got a cut-off saw today to finish up the cuts, it worked a lot better and was a lot more accurate. overall the cuts w/ the cut-off saw are just nicer. here's me cutting on some angle w/ the cut-off saw. that thing really throws the sparks i got all the pieces cut, well almost, i messed up on 2 so i'll haver to set up and cut those tomorrow but all the other pieces are ready for welding tomorrow hopefully this is just a pic of our weather station to show you guys what temps alaskan modders work at, the second temp is the sensor that is outside and its in Farenheit compliments, constructive criticisms? -glenn
Looking good! Question about the CAD drawing - is that a rad in the sectioned off top bit? Neat design if so - keep the air supply for the rad cool and the exhaust away from the main components Best of luck - will be keeping an eye on this one. Mod on and happy holidays
Dude i used to live in Alaska. I lived there like for the first 14 years of my life. AK REPRESENT!!!!!!! I feel pity for you, you have to pay double the price for anything you order online. Your project looks awesome and i look forward to finaly seeing a welded computer!!!!!! Good luck
