i know it may be a bit late now, but i think the fin would look amazing against the carbon if it was a piece of natural, stained wood. something pretty like a hard maple or oak. it would just give a good contrast to the mod and make it look very high-scale.

you think so? wouldnt it make too much of a contrast against the "future" theme of the case and the carbon fiber? Thats just my opinion, but i really like how it looks now.

This is looking amazingly cool. I think I already said this but this is by far the best carbon fiber work on any case i've seen. The design is also great and I really like the fin and the "gills". Great job, i can't wait to see this done.

ya i do. to me this case has kindof a retro-modern/art deco style to it and i think a nice wood would compliment well. the middle fin cant be the only wood component though. it needs to spread to the other fins on the side and onto at least part of the side panels.
i know this is probably going on a tangent to his design, but i think it would look very cool and he obviously already has the tools/experience to do it as he made the same pieces out of MDF.

adding some expensive wood is a interesting idea but the i´am nearly done with the case and theres no chance to change anything. i want to finish the project.
another raeson speaking against wood is my colour theme. white leds would fit but bright red and clean wood? i dont think it´s that beautiful.

i have some nice veneer lying arround here but this will be maybe a part of a future case.

Wow, I haven't been on here for some time. I have been thinking of some carbon fiber projects I would like to try but haven't had the chance or space to do anything. I must keep an eye on this.

i found some time to mod on and here are the results.

thats what we ended with in the last update.

i did just a rough cut, still wasnt shure about the dimensions.

but i looked good so i finished the first layer. in the end there will be 3 of them . 2 times wood and in the middle some plexi glas. ok it´s just clear styrene but it will do the job, too.

so next step was to paint the styrene. so no wood or yellowish colour from the plywood can be seen on the edge.

this cutout will be filled with a bunch of leds and some resistors
more about the led thing in the next days.

    stay tuned ...

those brackets will hold the sidepanels on the bottom. need some cutting first.

step one of wirering the sidepanels up .. some copper sheets to connect panels and electronics-tray

gold leaf to protect the copper form corroding

now we can start with the leds

44 per side, deep red and cold white (plcc2).

sometimes soldering got a bit tricky...

step one was to connect everything to ground.

first, wanted to put the leds in groups of 4, but that wasnt that beautyful on the edge. so i decided to split them up. some things became quite tight ...

thats just a third of alle cables that need to get through this.

more on that in the next days

as already mentioned .. it became really tight but now all cables are in there.

on the other side i used an old ide cable. that saved a lot of space.

a mirrorfoil was added to the windowside.

now it´s time to glue everything together.

today we head on to the light inside the case.

to light the inside up i´ll gonna use this LED. this is a 1w lumi-led emitter in daylight white and it´s unbelievable bright. i have to use a led because there´s not enough space for a cathode.

the coppersheet is for cooling the led. uncooled it would melt within seconds.

test set-up. the strange red stuff is old thermalglue. looks ugly . smells ugly, no further details ...

the first heatsink was a bit too small (60-70°C), so i made a bigger one and 2 small ones for the resistor. that thing get´s pretty hot , too (90°+).

not that beautyfull, but works fine

    another testsetup.

    one led to light up...
