Project Cytherea (formerly Project Shuttle meets Epia meets Smoothwall)

Just a quick bump ... this project is not dead, but after running through all the little filing and rounding off bits I can do, I need to do some spraying now ... and its too cold for it

This log will live again, soon. Promise I've got a part finished shuttle case sitting on my shelf taunting me to finish it

Well, I've finally gotten some progress on this, and a bunch of pictures.

Rubbing compound, one old towel, black trim wax (was the only black wax I already had, I will eventually get some proper black car wax), and the old favourite, the kitchen sink.

Lots of elbow grease, a couple of soft polishing cloths stained black from the wax and white from the rubbing compound and about 2 hours later ...

I'm very impressed by the finish on this, there's some more shots later on showing just how shiny it turned out.

The face plate ... the last picture of this before painting was covered with masking tape. I decided to remove the masking tape and just paint the whole lot. I removed the plastic discs surrounding the LEDs and buttons first and stored them safely, then laid down some paper in the garden shed, and sprayed on two nice thick coats of black paint.

All dry and test fitting. The orange perspex just needs holes for the buttons and LEDs now.

I don't have any pictures of how I bored out the holes, but I basically used a dremel, and VERY carefully expanded out the size of the hole. Luckily they all fit just right too

Happy with this, I removed the backing and protection sheet from the perspex.

With that stuff done, I have the fun stuff next. First up, is the faceplate. I've been tracking down some milliput and I'm gonna use it to fill in all the holes I don't need, and hopefully do something pretty with it too.

Plans for the inside of the case include a UV orange fan, UV orange lighting and UV orange cable braid for the cables, when I eventually get them

I think you're confusing this shuttle case with a porn star of similar name

I've got several things I'd like to do with the face plate. Right now I am considering getting a block of 12 - 14 mm thick acrylic and replacing the whole thing directly, only real problem with that is that there's no places anywhere near here that actually sell that kinda thickness acrylic, and given I need such a small piece, it is made harder.

 

Nope, that paint job is sexier than any porn star, trust me.

As for the thick acrylic, try looking for a sign manufacturer or some other industrial company that'll have some fairly heavy-duty stuff and since you need such a small piece I expect you could get an off-cut.

 

Putting a piece straight onto the front brings up problems with the parts of the case that aren't flush, that I don't really want to be removing. It's gonna take some thinking I'll have a look and see what companies I might find locally, thanks.

i like the plexi front panel, did you countersink the screw holes?
I'm thinking of making my own front panel for my SN41G2, but if its a lot of effort a may fork out the cash and get one from xport1 or an alu one from somewhere, so how easy is it?

Yeah I did countersink them, using some twist wood screw bits.

I made the smaller hole all the way through, then drilled with a larger bit only half way through to countersink it.
