I decided to go for the active 240 rad. I've just ordered part of the stuff I need together with the last components for my HTPC. Next week I'll order the rest.

The story continues – watercooling stuff arrived

After a few difficult deliveries, all the stuff I ordered and need for the changes I’m about to make has arrived. Work will probably start in a week or so, I’m going to install my HTPC first so I have a computer to process pics on while Der_Meister is on the operation table.

Here are a few pics of the new stuff…

Two chipset blocks…AquaComputer Twinplex XT in the same style as the CPU waterblock


Another Airplex EVO 240 rad and mounting plate. This will go inside the ‘box’ under my monitor. The mounting plate is handy to, well get it mounted of course. More detail on this later on.


I also bought some fittings…


Because watercooling the NB means I have to take off the heatpipe array on my mainboard, and this will leave the Mosfets bare, I needed a solution for them. I found these nice heatspreaders…


Some fans I have lying around, they will be put to use. The Noctuas will go on the external rad. It won’t be visible so their colour doesn’t matter. I’ll try the Scythes as replacements for the fans on my internal rad. They should be a lot quieter than the Noiseblockers I’m currently using (at roughly the same CFM).


I needed some more tubing as well. It seems to be more whitish than the tubing I currently have, although it should be the same stuff. I also bought two quick-disconnect fittings for the external assembly. The blue spiral is Smartcoil, should be UV-blue but will probably not be used. I just bought it in case I can’t put the tubing without the risk of kinks. It seems like good quality stuff, pretty stiff but still very bendable.


This is the current plan of the new loop. Ignore the tubing you see, just look at the lines I added.
The pump is at the bottom right, so the loop goes: pump – GPU – CPU – NB – SB – external rad – internal rad – Aquatube – back.


I like it this way, the placement of the pass-through fittings to the outside of the case means I can put the tubing that goes out and the one that comes in and to the internal rad out of the way. Much better than my previous plan (see previous post) where everything would be cluttered together.


A couple of pics that don’t have anything to do with Der_Meister, but are a bit related. Here’s the HTPC case I bought: Silverstone ML02. It looks really really nice. Would not look back next to Der_Meister, it’s completely my preferred material and colour scheme. The front is made of shiny plexi, on the right there’s a VFD-display.

The HTPC is a different story than the one in this thread so that’s all I’m currently posting about it. If you want, I can post some more pics of the hardware and the installation. Just let me know, I don’t think it’s worth starting a thread for.

Finally, because you were all so picky on my CRT after my previous post that contained pics of my desk: here’s a pic of the box of the monitor I’m currently using (the pic of the screen itself was a disaster – it’ll be something for later on). Samsung 215TW.

Hi mate, where did you buy those heapreaders? and the pass pass-through fittings?

Hi,

the heatspreaders are made by Microcool, I bought them on ebay. They have 4 types: chipset, PLL, mosfet and micro. I bought the PLL and not the mosfet type, since those are small (for video cards). The PLL's should be a nice fit. All the dimensions of the 4 types are on Microcool's website www.microcool.it

The pass-trough fittings come from a german webstore, www.heranke.de
They have good prices for most of the common fittings.

Thats what is cool about these projects. We have the option to do a "rev.2" and reinvent what we have.. And thus the ability to make something great even greater!

well, some unexpected things that came along in real life kept me from really starting on the upgrade. I did take apart the wooden box under the monitor; the top piece will be re-used but a part off it needs to be sawed off, and new side pieces will be sawed from a left-over part of a furniture panel.
To make sure the cuts are as straight as possible, I'm getting help from a friend who owns a decent table-saw. Probably somewhere this week-end or next monday.

Pics will follow, I just wanted to report the 'official' start

Since Der_Meister will need to be opened up and the mobo taken out to add the extra waterblocks, I'll probably take the opportunity to do a clean windows install once it's back together. So it's time to backup as well. Also need to swap 8" screens (the touch screen one I have now will be used with the HTPC, I'm replacing it with a non-touch screen one, since the touch screen software was very very confused about my three screen extended desktop). And there are a few other things I would like to do before opening up the case. So I'll be working 50% on that and 50% on the wooden box and the external rad.

Stuff to do on the wooden box / external rad:

- saw the pieces with my friend's table saw, adjust them if necessary
- assemble the pieces and add some inner woodwork (basic stuff, the box is wider than the rad so I need to add a support for the alu angle that will hold the rad grille)
- sand down the top piece, fill up obsolete holes and scratches, prepare to paint
- make alu pieces to hold the rad grille, tap holes to attach the fan grille
- paint the wood
- attach the alu pieces
- rinse the radiator, add fittings, sleeve the fans, prepare the wiring from the fans to the case
- attach fans and radiator

All in all, this won't take too long I guess.
Unless I start doing extra stuff of course. Like, the wooden box up till now had a few compartments made of plywood underneath the top where I put my pens, controller for my speakers, etc. I don't think I'll put them back in because they would hinder the airflow coming from the rad. I could put in something made of Mesh though, although I don't really need it. Oh well, let's see what happens next week...

found your work-log, - guided by fortune - yesterday, and now im done. i have been gone through the complete log ( an i really mean the c o m p l e t e log ).

going sad when i thought its going to be over and finished. but now tadaa... your on the road again...

so i signed in to let you know that you deeply impressed me. that was an outstanding good work and come not only to a sweeeet case than a nice piece of art!
i love the "blue look"! blue is my favourite too!
