Got to say I'm another who is not to sure about the bio/mech style of the case, but the skill and craftmanship cant be faulted. That is some excellent work there.
Hey everyone, thanks for all the encouragement. I certainly have gained quite a new skill with this fiberglass, that's for sure. maybe I'll go get a job at a custom body shop now maybe not. I really hope to cut the window soon, but I am having a hell of a time coming up with something that is revealing of the interior, yet fitting for the style. I know whatever I decide on, there will be wire mesh (either hardware cloth or chicken wire) directly behind the plexiglass. Any suggestions will be more than welcome. Anyway, first I wanted to give you a look at a dry fit of the top. It is now clearcoated, as mentioned previously. Otherwise work goes slowly I'm sorry to say. Next, I was out doing some Halloween shopping and was overcome. I saw this $2.99 glow in the dark skull that I think would be great on the door. The styling will be similar to the top, accept that I think I will have it coming more directly out. I am going to play with the design a little, and with the jaw bone and see what happens.
Dang, another skull. That case is a little creepy. I agree, there is definately some real potential with the mouth of that thing. Have it open and close with the door or somthing.
Okay, sorry for the long time between updates here. Work before hobbies, right? Anyway, I got started more with this next skull and have decided on a window cut. First off: For the window I have decided on the Punisher skull, as I think it is a nice looking skull image that will translate to a case window well. It will be about 2/3 of the total skull, as it will be coming out of the lower left corner, so only the upper right areas will be seen. I was going to Photoshop it to get a better idea, bet ath the moment Photoshop won't open. The cutting begins. Done with just a pocket knife The front cut finished These holes are drilled all the way around. They are how I am mounting the wire that will act as a guide for the fiberglass. First guides installed And another angle
I like the way you think quicksilver. Alot like me I love the skulls. I have a few plans for a case that involves tons of skulls, skeletons and other macabre things. Just out of curiosity, what kind of music do you listen to?
He says its paper mache but I think he's its real, way to cover up a murder Nice work so far. Personally I would stick with just the one skull 2 would be overkill imo (no pun intended).
I really listen to everything but country and rap. I was raised on classic rock, matured to grunge, party with metal, so it just depends on the time of day mostly. As for the skulls, what does everyone else think? More or no? If I don't use the skull on the door it's no big deal, it was only $2.99. I'll end up lighting it on fire or something and throwing it at a car.
Use it!! Skulls = sweet! I have a fan grill design (lookie meh piccy thing over dere <------- ) offering it up to you if you planning on having any grills done, just there as an offer. Case looks gr8, a lot of effort gone in to the molding, i think will all get paid back tenfold when you see the final case all smooth n skull'y! Keep up the gd work! -cLoWn
SEK, not too far from Joplin, MO. Thanks, do you cut those out yourself? I might be interested, but that remains to be seen. I am definately on a quest here for a quiet PC, with the radiator fan being a big slow 120mm, but I do have tho two 80mm that I am going to make switched as well as speed controlled. The thing with those is that with the Antec fan cage, fan grills don't mount well if at all, but I might be able to do something about that. So far, response on both the second skull and window seems to indicate full speed ahead to me. Also I think I might do some relief air brushing on the front and top skulls (probably should have considered that before clear coating the top, no big deal though). Someone point me towards cheap airbrush kits.
The grill does reduce air flow by 50%, so high performance fans are a no go. I dont cut them myself unfortunatly, another bit-tech member cut them for me, came to around £10 a grill, which is about the same price as one from a supplier. Seom air brushing to highlight and define the skulls would look really good imo. -cLoWn
In a bout of creativeness I broke out Paint Shop Pro, which I don't like too much, but it's all I got until Photoshop decides to un-dumb itself. Here's a mock up of the window cut. The lump middle left is where the door handle goes.
That would be a cool window there, I like the idea of the skull on the door to. LOL, I was in Walgreens today waiting for a prescripion (sick from work today ) and I saw some skull shot glasses and of course thought they would be sweet cut in half as they had a skull on each side and mounted on a modded case. Good job so far man, keep it going.
Here is a slightly better rendering of the window, done to the actual side. I definately think yes to this. I am going to tape it off tomorrow and see if I can't cut it. I am going to try it with a RotoZip with a carbide bit. I think that will allow for some good curves.
looks good so far ! keep those updates coming.. really liked the way you used the skull theme and i saw that the reservor is quite close to the skull are you gonna drill a hole for the tube? or are u gonna use its eye/mouth?
The tubes will enter through the cheek holes. I am currently having a debate over the quality of my reservoir though at the moment. It seems to want to leak around the lower barb no matter what I try, so I might end up giving it one more go to build it, rather than load it up with any more silicone or teflon tape.
Let's make a hole. To start, I plotted out my window in Photoshop using guides that will correspond to a grid on the panel: From there I masked off the panel with masking tape, then drew a grid on it at 2 inch intervals, that is the same as the picture. Then the transfer of the outline was a simple matter. I scribbled the edges, more for the teeth than anything, just to make sure I didn't cut the wrong lines. Another angle Started with a pilot hole... ...ended with one chewed up bit. I thought I would be clever and use my RotoZip to cut the window, this worked great for a very short period. Then it objected and threw lets of sparks and stopped cutting. I think this could still work, but I need to find a carbide bit instead of these, I think it would hold up much better. If all else fails I guess I will break out the old Dremel and jigsaw.
Unless your side panels are aluminum, the roto prolly won't cut it too well in router-position. Get some cutting disks, then get the basic shape out, then some good files and one carbide bit to finish off the curves.
