All steel baby. I have pretty well resolved that I am going to have to Dremel it, for the most part anyway. I can use it to at least thin it out enough that it will be easier to cut through, and I think a jigsaw will make short work of the teeth area. I just don't trust a jigsaw with big sweeping curves in metal. And I can get an order of tungsten carbide bits on eBay cheap.

Thanks a lot, it's that sort of excitement that makes doing it worthwhile to me.

Look for updates to the window tomorrow. I think that rather than cutting pieces of metal and glueing it to the plexiglass for the eye and nostrils of the skull, I might etch the plexiglass instead. Yay or nay?

Are you going to have flames spew forth and demons fly from your case when you turn it on? I cant wait to see the window done, fantastic job on the top, keep up the good work.

Okay, looks like I will go with the pieces glued on.

Anyway, got cutting today. I ended up going with the trusty ol' standby: Dremel with cutoff wheels. I picked up a tungsten carbide bit, good for cutting hardened steel and cast iron. The problem was the throat on it was so short, I couldn't keep it steady. The rotary saw and Dremel kept kicking out with it, which sucks, because it was able to cut the steel, but it really needed to be used with a router table or something.

Anyway, so this works fine, it's just slow. Here is the start. I lost motivation befaore I finished, plus these heavy doors have a way of wearing out a Dremel after a while, so I wanted to give it a break. It is going smoothly though now.

    The start.

Here's my stopping point. Most everything but the teeth has been etched.

Membership campaign is going on at our radio station. This means that I have a lot of time for tedious work. So, I started wiring my VFD. This will be housed in an acrylic box, with a tinted front and LED's inside, if all goes right. For those interested, this is a Noritake 800A 128x64 Graphic VFD. Several free LCD programs have now completed support for this display.

Lines soldered to the power input. It takes 5V.

Getting power through two of the unused pins in the socket
    [IMG]

Using a cut down floppy cable for the data line
    [IMG]

Beginning the installation of pins to the end of the wires.

All pins in place. note the one with the heatshrink. My stupid ass tore that one, out of them all, one of the very last ones. The wire in floppy cables is VERY thin, and hence easy to break, guess it had to happen to one of them. I had to actually fold the wire over twice to make it dense enough to grab onto the pins. I chose the pin insert D-Sub model because I find that it's not worth it to go through the trouble of soldering and heatshrinking each terminal, and soldering floppy wires isn't easy since they are so fine.

Pins have found a home in the D-sub female connector along with the power lines on the far side.

This is the pass through connector. At the PC end of the parallel cable, this will come out and plug into the jack which will be wired to a 5V source. It's lines run through the cable back to the display through the to extra pins.

I hope to get the cable modified with the pass through power connector to test it tomorrow.

Flames on this skull would look out of place IMO. The reason that skull has flames on it is because it is the Offspring's logo.

Yeah, I am going to have to pass on the flames, while I do enjoy the Offspring's music, I think that addition to my window just wouldn't look right since I am not pulling flames into the design anywhere else.

And my (now ex)gf at the time hated it. She could appreciate the work that went into like the fiberglass and stuff, but she hated the skull.

    Disaster strikes

Well, I thought I had it nailed. I had a $8.00 PSU that would deliver 25A @ 12V. I immediately began the deconstruction - reconstruction process.

The innards. Look how tiny. This will be so great right?

Desoldering EVERYTHING not essential to making the PSU put out power. Note that I did desolder the wires, not just clip them. This will be visible, and I didn't want a bunch of tails showing.

The result, with voltage switch and ATX switch hardwired now, and only lines for 12V(for TEC) and 5V(for VFD) left behind.

This will tuck away awesome in the front of the case underneath the drive cage. Nothing like exposed caps...mmmmmmm....

And Kaboom. Fuse blew, and this thing (ceramic disk cap?) EXPLODED.

    See the big missing chunk?

Do I try to replace this part and the fuse and go at it again, or junk it? Only time will tell.

Must bump thread! Things have been slow recently due to sheer lack of time, but I DO have things updated. The TEC PSU part, which bombed above, is DONE! I also got the power supply for the case itself and am about to go apesh1t on it (I love modding PSU's). Pics soon.

    Looking good quicksilver.

Wait till you see my next project.

I just ordered 12 skulls for it.
    There not that big though.

I have tons of plans for my next case. Ive been writing ideas down for it for the past few months.

Im afraid a little cheap powersupply like that could NEVER properly power a peltier. You really need to look into a proper bench 12v supply, you really dont want to hurt your cpu after all this work.......

I have to agree, I have 2 of those PSUs, and they aren't good for too much power on the 12v line. While they are great for powering a medium sized system, powering high loads just isn't their thing :grr:

They must have been smoking something realy potent to put such a high rating on these supplies, perhaps someone forgot to tell them they are supposed to "sniff" the glue not "smoke" the glue :p

I like the fiberglass work, but I'm not too excited about the skulls. I still think it will look nice when completed though :thumb:
