I'm pretty sure there's not going to be a motherboard.

The idea I think is to have an enormous amount of storage at the end of a USB cable with its own power supply.

    Top Idea...

But he said in his first post that everything was going to be watercooled (CPU, GPU, RAM, etc...), hence why I asked the question.

if you read the first post, this is two mods, one is a shuttle type case with all the peripherals in it connected to another shuttle type case with the motherboard etc in it, via USB.

The sketches from sketchup are probably for the second part of the mod (see the first post).

    Yes, that's right. Thanks guys.

The sketch ups are of the external enclosure that will house the HDDs, DVD-RW, etc etc etc.

i had the same idea and have been saving up to build it, i was going to use a external power supply and only use HDD, maybe house a card reader.

My chassie to use is an old shuttle maybe or a custom case.

I like the idea of this as i dont have room for another monitor for another machine to run, plus the hassle of tranferring to another machine.

This is a cheats LaCie big disk, with extras and i love it!!!!!

Okay, i've basically finished the design for the external enclosure. I have still not got a card reader in there because i have yet to source one and measure it so that i can create it in Sketch Up. Otherwise, the model is pretty much complete. I moved a few things around so as to make the enclosure itself slightly smaller. I also placed the USB ports on front now as opposed to sitting somewhere closer to the back (which was a STUPID idea from the beginning).

Anyway, here are the images, high res images under these ones. I suggest you have a look at the high res ones, much nicer ;)

That's the basic idea for the final design.

I'm also in the process of ordering a reservoir (or two) amongst other things. I'm stuck guys. I can't decide. It's between the following:

I can either have Two of these on top of the case,

Or perhaps one or two of these some where inside or outside,

Or, of course, there's also the Swiftech Res which is also great.

I have yet to decide. I'll see how i feel later and then i'll place my order.

Let me know what you think :D

Ok, so we've established that this mod consists of:
1 SFF case containing Motherboard and expansion cards
1 SFF case with a couple hard drives, optical drive, and necessary components to connect
    5 External Drives (1 2.5" and 4 3.5")

That ends up being a total of 7 separate cases where one would do... I'm confused as to why. Most people use SFF cases because of the ability to save space, or for portability, but if you're going to add all of those peripherals you aren't saving any space and it'll be a pain in the ass to move everything. Not to mention all of the extra cords involved...

And why the name Genocide? Will it have to do with the end aesthetic of the case? Or is just a word you picked out of the dictionary at random?

Just my first thoughts after looking through this...

No. It's only 2 cases. Main with Mobo/CPU/RAM

and a second one with hdd's/optical drive/acessories. He is stripping the external casings to get the IDE to USB converters

Dude, you have it ALL wrong. Go back and read my first post please. There will only be ONE SFF PC (the actual computer) and ONE external enclosure housing 2 HDDs and one DVD writer and a few other goodies. That's all, no other crap. Please go back and read my first post.

I've answered that question too. *sigh*

It was a word i heard on TV one night and decided to use it.

I like the idea here! I am looking forward to this project... It is surprising how many people comment without reading the posts, huh?

I'm still thinking about that. I thing that the main PC itself is gonna be a black/red or black/orange combo, still not sure yet though...

I can't explain to you how irritated i get. The mod that i'm working on at the moment, that i'm finishing so that i can start this one, has been up on a few local South African forums, for well over a year now, and every now and then someone asks a question which i answered two posts up. I can't explain how irritating it is... :duh:

i think this is one of the most interesting mods going on at the moment and very different. Congratulations on the Sponsers. i would love sponsers but im going to build up my Skill before asking around. again im very impressed with the concept. out of interest with the power supply i guess youll be turning it on with a toggle switch? or will you use a fancy method using the usb signal?

I have yet to decide on how and what power switches i'll be using. Those are the fine details. I dont want to use toggle switches though, they're not pretty. I'll see :)

Well I'm sorry that I couldn't tell the difference between the hardware that you are using and the hardware that you aren't. There was no distinction between the two sets. Furthermore, it would be expected that the swag you get from a sponsor is actually used somewhere in the mod. I apologize for my ignorance at your post organization method.

On this one I was entirely in the wrong. I missed the answer in a stream of quotes. Sorry.

Excuse me? Of course there's distinction, had you actually READ my first post, you would have found that distinction. Listen to me, you are the ONLY member that misunderstood the first post ENTIRELY. Every other person that has replied here understood what i'm planning on doing. Go back, and READ my first post, carefully, if you do, you'll understand exactly what i plan on doing. I can make the EXACT assumption you did:

"Ok, so we've established that this mod consists of:
1 SFF case containing Motherboard and expansion cards
1 SFF case with a couple hard drives, optical drive, and necessary components to connect
    5 External Drives (1 2.5" and 4 3.5")"

Just by looking at the pics. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the way i organized my post. My first post was exactly how a first post should be, containing plans and ideas and to the point.

    Guys, nice nice update :D

I've gone and changed the entire platform of the mod. It's like a 180' turn going on here. Originally, i was planning on using the XCCube i have at the moment, which contains the following setup:

    P4 2.8Ghz, HT
    2x 1GB Team XTream DDR500
    Radeon X800XT PE
    220W AOpen PSU
    AOpen Case

That has ALL changed. I managed to get my hands on one of these monsters:

That, my friends, is a Shuttle XPC SN26P. This is a MONSTER of a SFF PC. It's slightly bigger than the XCCube, but it's a million times better.

Interested in the new platform? Well, the board is amazing.

-> It's a socket 939 based board, supporting regular A64, Athlon X2, and Athlon FX.
-> It's got an nVidia nForce 4 SLI chipset (yes, i said SLI).
-> It's got two DIMM slots, dual channel of course.
-> 7.1 channel on board audio
    -> Gigabit LAN
    -> FOUR SATA ports
-> And last, but certainly not least, it's got a frikken 350W PSU!! 350W! These Shuttle PSUs are so efficient. This PSU powered my FX60, both my 7800GTs, a DVD RW, and a HDD, and it was asking for more. I almost put a frikken 8800GTX in here. I have one lying here at my house, it's one of my friend's card, i wanted to run it so bad :p

Here's a link to the product page

I also ordered the card reader that i'll be tearing apart for the mod:

    That's a Vantec card reader.

I ALSO ordered the reservoir. For the res i'll be using an Alphacool Cape Cool 10:

Now all i need is a socket 939 CPU, and a video card (or two :D ). I'm gonna keep trying to source that stuff. I can't wait to start this mod, it's gonna be a nice one :D

Let me know what you guys think :D
