A very late thanks to those who commented. Especially mnpctech, an honor to get a comment from you, love the work you do!

I apologies to those who might get a little upset because I brought back a thread that is pretty old now, just thought that a few of the people who followed my work log might be interest in a bit of news about my case.

Not long after xLAN (the main reason I built the case) Another competition came up. The competition was PC World (New Zealand) Hottest Mods 2007 http://pcworld.co.nz/pcworld/pcw.nsf/web/NT00030422

Well, I entered. A month or so later I got an e-mail saying I was a finalist and to send a high resolution picture with as little in the background as possible in which I had about 3 days to do. Unfortunatley at the time I was away on holiday having a great time in the snow about 4-5 hours drive from home and my case was at home and in bits as Intended to do some more work on it. I had pretty much no way of getting a photo of it. I sent an e-mail off explaining this and hoped they could just use what I had already sent. I didn't hear back for a few days but there wasn't much I could do so I just enjoyed my holiday.

Luck was on my side though, I did hear from them! They had decided after getting a few pics from other finalists that weren't up to the quality they needed that they would extend the deadline and get either a professional photographer to come round and take photos of if possible I could take my case in and get photos done at their office. Off I went to get photos taken as my work is only about 20 mins from their offices.

I didn't hear anything from a while. Then one evening I was at a petrol station and went to look for their magazine to see if it had anything about the competition thinking that it would probably be in the next months issue. When I found the mag, it wasn't the same cover as I had seen on their site. I soon realized it was actually the next moths Issue which must have only just been on the shelves! I quickly flicked through to see if it was in there and then about half way through the magazine There it was, my case, and it was a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say I was more then happy. Front page on bit-tech for mod as part of mod of the month, 2nd at xLAN, on national TV with my case, and finally Winning my category in the PC worlds Hottest Mod 2007 competition, Yeah.... I think I have done pretty good with this one! :D

Here are some pics of what I won, and some better pics of the case. I will try can the whole magazine article in the next few days and post it up.

Bravo, good craftsman ship, i think that is something very unique and really nice. Love how you took the time to redesign it not once but twice. Shows some real dedication.

Better late than never! Congratulations on that win, nice reap huh? :)

You'd look into mass-production of that case/monitor-combo - nice and easy to transport. A la Apple (but NOT Apple, if you get me? ;) ) Maybe it's not nice, but can I ask you how much you've spent on this project in total?

    /Frido

Thanks very much to all for the kind comments.

Lucky for me there are people here in NZ that still want to buy Windows Vista so I managed to sell it on Trade Me (local version of e-bay) The mother board has also been sold and I am hoping to sell the CPU soon. As much as I would have loved to keep all these prizes I needed to sell them to fund my next project. A home made CNC Machine. So that I can make some more and even better mods.

I would love to get into producing some custom cases and selling them but unfortunately here in New Zealand there probably isn’t much of a market for it this sort of thing I wouldn’t think.

From what I remember (I try not to think about it) This is a rough break down on what it cost. All in NZD

    Fiber Glass Supplies $300
    Paint $200
    Motors and speed controllers $250
Carbon for screen mounts FREE (Probably about $50 worth though)
Aluminium for Internal FREE (About $120 to buy)

So the major parts if you include the cost of the items I got for nothing and not including extras which I haven't listed it works out to about $920 NZD which is roughly $700 USD or £340 GBP

I do plan to do some more work on the case to make it a little more practical, Lighten up the internal structure a bit to make the case easier to carry and change the way the mother board etc mounts to make the plugs more accessible but this will be a future project that may not happen for a little while.

Another bit of good news, I was contacted by a national late night news person who wants to interview me about winning the competition and my mod and previous mods. So it looks like I get to be on TV again. Scary but cool!

Once again thanks to everyone for the comments! :D

Congratulations Zero_Limits! That is so awesome to be selected and be a finalist/winner in multiple competitions. All this media coverage, WOW! It is good to see some decent rewards for all your efforts.

This case definately goes into the 'Masters Series: Unique Mods'... if there ever is such a book ;)

    Mod on!

    Cheers
