Thanks for your comments all :thumb:

As for Forged components Johnny/Krikkit is correct, they are much stronger and lighter compared to the standard cast items, they can withstand higher temps and take a lot higher revs due to them being stronger.
On Evo's 4-8 generally in the UK people wont go much over 400bhp on the standard rods (weakest link) because they could snap and destroy the engine, Evo 9's can generally go a bit more to around 430-450 and 10's are still being pushed to see what they can do although 500 has been seen!

Rule of thumb generally is if you want over 400bhp then you forge the rods and pistons and if you use decent ones then you have a bottom end capable of ~600bhp which mine is but that's the limit on the standard crank so in reality 550bhp would be highest I would personally want to go without getting cocky!

If you want more power than that then you need to talk stroker engines where you increase the engine capacity to a 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4 with a forged crank, pistons & rods then with head work, big lumpy cams etc you will be into the 600-1000bhp area like a lot of the time attack cars are (uberrrrrr fast!) :D

I'm eventually going to be sat somewhere between the 500-550 mark when I save up enough pennies for the Garrett GT3076R ball bearing hard as nails turbo :naughty:
I took the car to Llandow track last Sat for some testing and it went well, feels really good now its stripped and has the cage bolted in (pics to come) :D

Again you are spot on mate for most turbo'd cars but on standard Evo turbos (well the 4 onwards) they have twin-scroll turbos as standard so headers 1 & 3 go into one scroll and 2 & 4 into the other making it spool quicker as there's less exhaust gas interference, see pic below showing the 2 scroll entry into the exhaust turbine :thumb:

firstly, saw this and :eeek:..... :brrr:
its pics like this that want me to get this foundation year out of the way and get onto the third year of my mechanical engineering degree!!! (mainly so i can learn how to modify my 1.2L corsa to give it a 'small' ;) increase in performance)

Pssh, an apprenticeship in the field would teach you that far better than the degree would. No good knowing how it works if you don't know one end of a spanner from 'tother. Plus, if it's a Corsa C you have... no, don't. They suck. I have one. Absolutely vile little machine.

You are going to be very disappointed with mechanical engineering I'm afraid!

Seriously, if you need a degree in ME to work on a car, then your in for a rather rough life! That's like saying you need dual degrees in physics and chemistry to cook a steak. Buy the shop manual and read up a bit, get some tools and go to town. You think car mechanics all have ME degrees?

only reason why i said it was because in my third year i will learn how to modify an engine to fit a turbo/supercharger that wasn't designed to have one fitted to it, and i'll get to do it to an engine that i do not own first. so if it all goes tits up i can just stand there and be like 'meh'

So you're going to wait 3 years then supercharge a 1.2 Corsa C? Lal. :D

Its a y reg corsa b. I'll still be a student then so won't be able to afford a newer car. I'll probably then turn it into a ratted corsa when I finish uni and get a proper job.

No. Just no. Save the money you would spend on the Corsa and just buy a better car.

It's not that hard. Lower the stock compression by using dished pistons or by shortening the connecting rods. Fab a new exhaust collector with a mounting plate for the turbo. Run your intake air through an intercooler, and then tune to taste. If you run a waste gate to keep the boost mild, you might not even need to crack the block open. It's more fabrication and layout then mechanical engineering. Gear heads have been doing it for years, some with out even finishing High School. The hardest part will be mastering the tuning software and getting your fuel tables right.

This. At least a better engine. Engine swaps into a Corsa B are not uncommon in South Africa. At least amongst a certaine group of people anyway *cough* chavs *cough*

And yes, I did simplify the above. But I'm in the planning stages of pulling a GOO, so I do have an idea of what it takes. Well, almost a GOO; I plan on building my frame. Just waiting to see where we will end up next to finalize the plans.

Seriously, google "locost". If old dudes can build an entire car from scratch in their garages, there is now way you need an ME degree to boost a 1.2 Corsa.

Yep :hehe: Back when I was a kid and an apprentice mechanic, I had started the job with just a little bit of relevant knowledge from reading a couple of books, on engine function and engine modifications... and I **** you not, I knew much more, than about half the mechanics who worked there, including a couple of the very experienced old ones :worried:

I wouldn't bother boosting the corsa = alot of money spent for little return. If I wanted to improve it, it would either be an engine swap, or light mods, such as large cold air intake, wrap the exhaust manifold, low restriction muffler, and dyno tune (or if you really wanna be cheap, add extra fuel by setting up a switch to trick your temperature and/or oxygen sensors ) I'd also fit a thicker rear swaybar to improve the handling.
I would also try to resist the evil temptation to fit a fart cannon, spoilers or stickers :worried:
    /threaddrift

Epic car coolamasta  Are you gonna pop a mega vented carbon bonnet on it? Blue carbon would be nice! :naughty:
How about plastic windows? There's not much else you haven't done!
It would be a an absolute crime to the gods of eye candy, but you haven't wrapped that sexy header either... it might wear out your turbo a little bit faster, but if you're getting a new one soon anyway then that's no biggie.

That's cool. I want to start repairing my car by myself but I'm a little hesitant (as with anything else in life tbh). I'm more interested than ever though and I actually have above average knowledge of how cars work so I just need to get my hands dirty and give it a shot ;)

I would love to swap the engine of my Accord for an H22. It's, apparently, a very easy job and I would have my brother and my father to help.

I just don't have the cash :sigh:

Usual recommendations for you as well then, light mods or an engine swap will be better value for money! A cold air intake can be easy to fabricate, it's also easy and not too expensive to wrap your exhaust manifold, and a hi flo yet non fart canon rear muffler replacement can be cheap if you don't have it (no big pipes, that's just gonna lose power with a standard engine especially on the street)
You'll notice a nice little improvement in response, a tiny bit better economy, and a tiny bit more power.... big power costs money, just ask coolamasta :D

Big power costs a lot of money quickly.

I don't know much about cars (I am learning as I go with a mechanic mate of mine, while we work on the missus's Golf Mk2, and hopefully later this year on my mate's Birkin), but I know that power costs money.

The reason why Evos, Supras and Skylines are populare tuners is because they're GREAT out of the box, and at REALTIVELY low cost can be upgraded into something vicious. The Engines in those vehicles are made to handle way more power than they kick out in stock format, so bigger turbos etc are no uncommon.

Dude, that is some serious investment and work!! Congratz on the project.

I know Sweet FA about cars, but the one thing i do know is that the more BHP you have the more super cars you can trounce off the lights and make the old men driving them feel just a little cheated out of there £ 100k investment :D

If you ever break down/explode in a glorious ball of nitrous-oxide flame then my Toyota Hilux Invincible, can come tow you away :D:D

    Seriously sweet car though:rock:

Rob, this thing is absolutely insane... Can't believe how much work you've put into this. I WANT it! :D

Yours truly is going to arrive home with a '94 Celica GT-4 some day, and it's gonna get exactly the same treatment as your Evo ;)
