This is a little project I started when my girlfriend told me she did´nt want two computers in our little oneroom appartment, wich totally understand btw. The idea is to have a small table by the couch wich you can lift the top up and tada you have a computer. Please give me some feedback on the idea and construction... I´m not going to start building this right now, but when I do I´ll start posting pictures... BTW. Sorry if I placed this thread in the wrong category...
Looks a good plan, my only worry is that the monitor is heavy and the support for it will have to be strong. Also the angle that you will see the screen at will be odd, any chance of fitting an lcd screen into the lid instead? You may also need to add some ventilation holes and / or fans into the base unit. There was a photo in a UK magazine last week about a man who had built his computer into a cupboard space. Good luck with this, keep us updated,
When I first saw the title, I thought you were trying to build a girlfriend, just like I did, when I didn't have a date for my 8th grade prom
thanks for the feedback... Moo >> yeah i thought of putting a lcd in there but this is a kinda budget to start with... As for fans I´ll put in one or two 120 mm fans in the back, running on lowspeed for dragging out all the hot air... disco >> hehe... nope I already have a girlfriend and I think she´ll be kinda upset if I build a new one =) btw love your at-case
It would be cool to have an internal spring mechanism which had the same newton force as the monitor weight, so that when you lift the lid, the mechanism also raises the monitor.
Wow, I like the design. With that much room, if you build the case into the desk. (like in moo's pictures), you could still have room inthe desk for other stuff
Why didn't I think of something like that. That would definetely make my room lots cleaner, but on the other hand that doesn't matter anymore, because I'm looking for a new place to live anyway. But hey, I like the idea (first I thought you wanted to mod your girlfriend )
Zap >> I´m thinking of making room for her legs... If she´s going to sit in the couch she has to put her legs somewhere Have´nt figured that one out yet thou...
hehe i thought you were modding your girlfreind too. Hmmmm starting to think about stealthing the wife now. That way ill just get her out when i need her. /me hopes the missus never sees this or else it'll be John Wayne Bobbit time............ Again back on topic now. Its a great idea, i hope you can make it work. Luckily i have a whole attic to fill up with my computers so i dont have this problem.
Zap >> btw im not going to build the computer into the table in the beginning... and the chassis I´ll put in it is REALLY small...
Makes me feel happy... the material for the table is going to be... I don´t know what it´s called in English but it´s pieces of trea glued together, it´s quite strong and very goodlooking...
plywood welcome to the forums and the angle of view on that monitor is likely to give you a neck crick eventually.... though if you're seated on a couch that migh be a good height/angle for it other than that should be fine... just make sure you secure the monitor shelf to the sides & back with some long screws, and to use a fairly thick piece for it
cderalow >> nope that´s not the name... plywood is sheats of tree glued(?) together... the material im talking of is more like sticks of tree glued together... here in Sweden it´s called limträskiva... freely translated that´s gluetreeboard...
