there's particle board which is ground up wood/sawdust glued together and compressed.... there's mdf or medium density fibreboard... same theory as above.... there' plywood which is sheets of laminate glued together and then there's fibreboard which is like small strips of wood glued together... too many damn composite wood products and yes, this is a blast from the past, but I'm slow to notice stuff
all of the computer tables at school were like that, except that instead of having to lift up a big shelf thing the monitor sits underneath glass, so you can just look through it.
let's hear a w00t w00t for gluetreeboard. that stuff is like duct tape, it's job is never done! btw, this is a great idea, i can't wait to see the finished product.
Made some updates I have been sitting drawing in SolidWorks (3dCad system) for about a week now and this is what i´ve come up with... This is a view of the totally closed table... This is what it will look like when the doors are open and she can sit down and work... This is a how it looks when the side and top are removed... This is slightly flipped up so you can se the fan to remove the heat from the monitor... Here´s a even better empty view... The monitorfront in all it´s glory... This is a detailview of the drivebay... A view with the computerparts removed... notice the rail for the drivecage... Here you have a better view of the rail... Here´s a closer look of the buttons on the left side of the table... The order from the left... - hdd activityled - powerled - resetswitch - powerswitch Here´s a look of the drawer for the computerparts... you can se the green motherboard The purple Psu wich wount have the sidecovers on for better airflow... will put something there to prevent electrification though and the silver hddrack and black harddrives... The tubes are airtunnels for the 120mm fans in the front... the fan will run at 5 or 7volts to prevent noise... the hole in the bottom is for cables to run down to the compartment next floor... ______________________________________________ So... whats the verdict ? Any suggestions ? Like the drawings ?
Solid_Puffs >> yeah I´ve thougt of future upgrades... but there are no upgrades I can´t do at the moment... Zap >> thanks... it´s coming along quite fine I think...
I'ce been thinking of doing something like this for my mom. But I used a Mini ITX board mounted in a table, and a flat panel. This project is ten times better than what I came up with too. I like the tube idea
Cool Beans What a great idea! I wanna mod my girlfriend too, heh. Love the concept and the pictures are looking good. Waiting to see the glory of the finished product. Christopher Michael
Hello raxxo, very nice project this.. I just wanted to tell you that, since you're working on a pretty tight budget.. I might be able to help you out with some small things like fans and stuff. (After all, I live in Göteborg as well) I have a little book, completely crammed with ideas, sketches and stuff for a project I've been thinking about for waaay too long, and I've also collected quite a lot of stuff (I'm going for a very very low budget project, just for the heck of it) and I now have a large stack of misc. stuff that my girlfriend sometimes has.. opinions about (It's almost three monitor shipping boxes filled with junk) If you need anything, mail me and i'll see what I can dig up axly@home.se Looking forward to see more of this desk of yours, very nice idea.
I really like this idea, I think it'll look really nice once it's done. As for the board you were talking about, the most common name I've heard for it in the UK is "butcher block" (alot of butchers use it, surprisingly ). From what I've seen, it's more commonly made out of beech. Very nice looking material, and very strong. But it's basically 1"x1" lengths of beech laminated together.
Axly >> the project is idle at the moment... cause i did "Project: Temporary Project" (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44818)... So I wount be building this for the time beeing... but some day ArsoN >> ok thanx...
Looks like a pretty cool idea. However, I question the feasability of putting the cd drive at an angle like that. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just wondering if it will screw things up???? I have read on other posts, forums, articles that you can't (shouldn't) skew a HDD at an angle because of the speed at which stuff is spinning (or something like that). From my understanding the drives should only be horizontal or verticle. I don't know though. Maybe someone else could enlighten me on this? Like I said though you have a pretty good thing going there from what I've seen on the 3D renderings. Good luck in getting it all together. Later
AFAIK, you just can't tilt the spinning object at any time while it's spinning or else it'll muck it all up. Of course, I may be wrong, but it makes sense that an object spinning on a constant axis won't mind up from down or left from right. So long as it's staying in one place.
I was thinking about building a case like the dark crystal, only using a 45 degree angle on the slats of wood and plexi... \\\\//// \\\\//// \\\\//// ////\\\\ ////\\\\ ////\\\\ like thus and mounting the cd and dvd in the 45 to match the pattern. but if that would cause problems I would deffinately attempt to fenangle it via a different route... any hints and tips???
Looks like a cool idea but should it really be in this forum since nothing is done on the project yet?
Well the CD is held in place by two magnetic platters so having it on an angle should have little effect…as long as you do not move it while it is running…Has for HDs, I have had drives in all sorts of positions with no ill effect. I have also moved drives around while they are running with no problem. Disclaimer: These are my own findings from years of building and servicing servers and in no way imply nothing will happen if you do it. P.S. I love wood working. Always have...always will. You're design looks good. Have you choosen a wood or did I miss it?
