Yeah, they sure do...the noise was the biggest problem, though. Mine will also be built out of hardwood, so we'll have to compare notes! :)

Yeh, the heatsink that I'm using here had a 60mm fan on it. No idea of the noise though, I ripped it off straight away.

Yeg, I considered building one of those, but I think if you add up the parts and postage, I can probably pick one up on ebay for the same price. Plus I can't solder.

    Wahey! Project back on track!

I've nearly completed the case, but have neglected to take pictures of the process due to camera problems.
Final dimensions are 40(W)x25(D)x12(H). Had to be slightly bigger because I ended up having to use a MATX PSU, which I gutted.
    Other things to note....
*Invented a nifty CD-ROM mounting thing
*Made an air duct so that the two 80mms at 7v are cooling the CPU only. The PSU is being cooled by a 92mm, which is kinda acting as an intake for the rest of the system too, but there's nothing else that really requires cooling
*Bought some LEDs and resistors from LSDiodes.com, haven't arrived yet but should be nice to experiment. Havent got any plans for them yet. Probably just subtle lighting on the fan grilles. I bought 8 blue and 4 sea green with appopriate resistors for 12v supply.
*Mobo and PSU mounted on bottom plate - Mobo is screwed directly into the wood, PSU is screwed and glued due to weight.
*Hard drive mounted on front panel - I like the way I did this. I used mobo standoffs screwed into the bottom of the drive to raise it away from the panel, helping noise and cooling.
*Hinges bought - Self explanatory. Bough some simple hinges for case opening mechanism. I inted to have the top and the two sides opening up together. It needs to be this way since the cd-rom is mounted to the top and right side.
*Software decided - I'll be using Fedora Core 3 and MythTV for now. I'm hoping this wont use too much of the 10gb hard drive space...
*TV Card - I'll most likely be buying a TV card in the for sale forum. I'm hoping that this system will be able to cope with some recording. Doesn't need to be HDTV as it'll be used on a standard 32" widescreen TV.

    Final specs are as follows:
P3 733 CPU (or 800 if I manage to remove the heatsink that fujitsu appear to have superglued to it in another comp)
256mb SDRam - always after more 256mb sticks if anyone has any, since I'm using two 128mb sticks in the motherboards only 2 ram slots
    Voodoo3 16mb with TV-Out
10gb Hard Drive - If the parents are impressed with recording capabilities, they may invest in a large drive.
    10/100 Lan card
    Onboard sound
120W MATX Psu - Gutted, currently open to air inside the case, may cover in mesh if it causes interference.
48x CD Drive - Again, parents may invest in a DVDRW drive if impressed.

Will try and get pictures tomorrow.

A final question: Is it possible to get widescreen output with the S-Video out on my gfx card?

If you're having trouble removing the heatsink if you stick the whole thing in the freezer and let it freeze it might be easier to get off. If that doesn't work try heating it up with a hair dryer while you're prying at the heatsink.

Will that video card handle DVD playback. I thought you needed atleast 32MB video for DVD.

I've played DVDs before on an identical card but on a P3 500/128mb system before no probs.

well if u want to do it on the cheap get a pvr150 it will have a mpeg2 encoder so no matter if u stay at 733 it will not tax ur cpu. also look for a cheap used dvd player i picked up one here for 20bucks used at a computer store.
what are u going to use for a os?

afaik, all the PVRs except the 250 and 350 are all WinMCE only models. I haven't been able to confirm this, but I would say that support for anyother OS would eb unlikely...

Plus the 150 is still way over my budget.
In other news, I got the sink off the 800 CPU with a hairdrier.

Thats incorrect as the pvr 250 and 350 came out well before MCE was released (bit-tech did a review of the pvr250 years ago). Also the pvr150 is on special this bank holiday @ pcworld for £50, this will work with 2k/xp but not 98 but the pvr250 works with win98. Stompy if you want good dvd out try getting a cheap hollywood plus card.

LOok up KNoopmyth. ITs a free linux Media center works pretty good. THat and if you go to the wiki they show you how to use a MCE 250 on linux. But i wouldnt suggest this unless you have some knowledge of Linux.

OH and like herbs said you can still get pvr 250's and 350's which aernt MCE but they are harder to find and more expensive. Another example of M overpowering the man.

Bought a Pinnacle PCTV card from Sc0rian :)
Also I am currently glueing the top and right side panels together with a steel corner piece.

Stompy: if you aren't planning on adding anything else in the other PCI slots, I'd suggest a 90' adapter like these: http://www.mycableshop.com/3rd_Level/PCI32_RiserCards.htm
you can get dual PCI as well if you want to leave room for that video capture card in the future.

I had considered knoppmyth, but seeing as I have no Linux experience, and no confirmation of the PVR line working under linux, that put a quick halt to things...

I was trying to say that the non-MCE editions are the only ones that will work with 2K/XP without some monkey work, iirc. I've got a pair of stock 250's and they run just fine under XP Home. I would love to move up to a 500 and get the dual head setup going, but I'd rather sink the money into more hardware instead of a new OS to replace one that already works.

Wait, this just in from Hauppauge:
I stand corrected! Whee! I know what's going in the HTPC next then... Just gotta figure out what to do for a remote.

Its ok, the case is tall so I have loads of room :)
Loads of room around the PCI slot area, I'll be filling up every slot.
    AGP: Vid card
PCI1: Sound Card (decided to use one I've got lying around because it's 7.1 with optical out for the TV)
    PCI2: 10/100 network
    PCI3: TV Card
