Finally back to work, sort of.

Well, I finally got off my arse and ordered some hardware.

    ASUS P5Q-E Motherboard
    HIS Radeon HD 4870
    4GB (2 x 2GB) Patriot Viper PC2-8500
    SilverStone Strider 700W Power Supply

Plus the Intel QX-9650 CPU. Here's the money shot. :naughty:

And a fun shot it assembled on my current desk, since the heart of this project is the case for this gear. :)

As I told the wife, this is pure tech pron and I had a nerd-gasm firing it up. :hehe:

I have a nice sunny day today, so maybe I can work in the shop. But the yard needs some lovin too. Spring is springing in my red-neck of the woods. :D

A 4870 just as the 4890 came out?
Never mind, maybe next time ;)

    Otherwise, nice setup :)
Also, the Core 2 Extreme coolers look AMAZING.

Yup, ordered the 4870 and 4 days later the 4890 was released. oh well. Maybe if I add a second it will be a little less expensive. Although the cards have already dropped significantly. :)

The cooler is the stock cooler for now. The master plan is for water but I have to refill the budget first. ;)

ah, i'd love the vertical alignment, even without window. it would solve much trouble while playing with the hardware and plugging cables in and out. a shelve would be less secure too (i guess)
it would be absolutely fantastic to have mighty big red power button right in the middle of your desk :d ("I DECLARE THIS GAMING SESSION: OVER" (hits button with fist, computer powers down))

as for the DVD-player, maybe using a external usb-driven player, there are some nice ones, mainly aimed at laptops and netbooks w/o one. while not using (i certainly don't use it much anymore) you put it in a drawer (or in an automatic opening hatch)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. right now, the honey-do list has consumed all of my spare time. And it seems to grow more quickly than I can check things off. :miffed:

As far as the design is concerned, I've decided to stick with the original tray design. I like the fact that I can simply slide the entire system out as a single assembly.

It also appears my design skills exceed my wood skills :( so this project is stuck in a "Well WTF do I do now?" phase. Something will be done, I just don't know what yet. ;)
