OK. Thanks guys! I have to submit a single photo to be used for the contest voting page. All the other photos will be part of the presentation. I'm going with the maroon-coloured version because I think it will help Mission stand out in the crowd. There is a news article being written by a major tech site that will feature all three versions. I like that idea and hopefully it will turn out OK.
Then this might be a treat for you. LOL I've done the best I can do with the photography. I'm not used to shooting anything so big. Nothing is cropped or chopped and no flash was used. Nothing but Florida sunshine (between rainstorms) was used for lighting. Mission Complete. (Sorry I just had to do it.) This version is dedicated to the ladies and my stoner friends. Review of Mission specs... Intel E7400 C2D Gigabyte EP43-UD3L motherboard Palit GeForce GTX 280 4GB Crucial DDR2 1066 Silverstone Nitrogon NT06 HSF Silverstone 600W Strider PSU Seagate 400GB HDD Sony Blu-Ray optical drive I want to thank my friends at Silverstone and Crucial for hanging with me even during these tough times. Thanks for looking and thanks for all the comments and suggestions. It has been fun. I think I'll leave ATX tower modding to the experts and go back to my itty-bitty stuff.
Holy smokes that work is fantastic! Though I can't help but wonder if that's gonna suck to dust off.. heh..
Awesome! This is great work as always. So im still going for the red! its my fav. second fav is the stoner version I really like this, and although i understand your reasons for not stealthing the drive, i can't help but feel it is a bit out of place. Maybe if instead of covering it up, you changed it for a white plate and the stained it brown with plastic dye, that way no extra parts to slide in and it would fit so much better. (was going to suggest painting the black one brown, but that might clash with the look you are going for here) But other than that, awesome!
I admit the red does look classy but personally I still prefer the light cream colour. However that red with the red and gold sides does look awesome . +rep
Is everybody honestly telling me that this would look so much better than the Blu Ray drive? I showed a photo to my 92-year-old grandfather and he immediately recognized Mission to be a computer. Mission accomplished. (Pats self on back). Sorry...cranky...need more coffee
Thank you! It won't be my job once I turn it over to the site operator. Thanks! The bright paisley was my response to my wife's dull brown paisley. If you are going to bring it....then bring it. LOL Maybe the Beatles new releases will bring a new wave of 60's nostalgia.
Thanks but I'm not worthy. Seems to be a universal topic. It helps some if I remind them that the drive is not attached to the shell. It is a part of the internal chassis and slides into the back of a very close tolerance hole in the shell. The work involved in cutting three perfectly matched walnut squares (drive, tray and eject button), sand them and finish with brush-on lacquer and somehow do it perfectly so that it comes out looking like the above photo is, quite frankly, fool's work. To be perfectly honest, the drive is not a burner. I thought that I could live without a Blu Ray burner for a while and save myself some money. Turns out it won't burn anything, DVD or CD. That isn't why I left the drive "raw" but it did reinforce that I had made the right decision. It'll be gone in six months.
Naw, when I recommended that it was before I really understood your goal. For pure aesthetics (and a "hidden" computer) you may want to do the veneer over the BR drive, however it's clear to me that you still want your computer to be a computer. And, to some extent, resemble one. It's your vision mate, and however you do it is how it's supposed to be.
