twas chucking it down in manchester today so didnt bother messing about with the carb, instead i camped out in the car and wired up my stereo and central locking, still got the electric window motors to do tomorrow and fit the lower dash trays after hiding the wiring.

also got the front door cards to fit after getting some rubble sacks and duck tape to make door skins before putting the door cards on.

also popped the front and rear lights on the cars.

anyway a few piccies cos I'm off to play halo with the lads

    cheers lads

been told the 32 TLA will be too small for the 1.5 so thats on the bay, so its either a 36 TLP for 160 new or these

been offered these babies everythings brand new, inlet manifolds for these are around 140 and ill be able to fit them to either the 1.5 or the 1.6 gti and means the conversion to the gti lump will be ten times easier as i wont have to bother fitting the injection and fuel related tat

twin 40 weber dhla's, 25mm trumpets, 100mm filters, weber throttle linkage, twin cable + pedal adaptor, turbo reg and pressure reg

so its either 160 on a new weber 36 tla, 450 odd not including RR and setup for the twin 40s.

arghhhhhhhh decisions decisions, but those twin 40s look th e sex as with them being new i probably wont lose much when if i was to sell them at a later date

whats the deal with the seat patern? Not digging the stereo stuff either. You don't need to show off your audio equipment, keep it under wraps so no one walking by is going to think lets shatter a window and take this thing.

I say get a megasquirt unit and some decent injectors and convert the engine into full fuel injection and electronic spark. It will be more reliable and put down more power and also give you better fuel economy. 4x 25lb injectors are dirt cheep and they will be more than enough even if you go forced induction.

    Hiya Fella,

The seats are from a mk2 golf gti, they are called rainbow seats. They won't be staying for too long, i just happened to sell the bucket seats that were due to be fitted as i didnt like them.

As for the stereo, i used to hide the amp in the spare footwell but this cars had it chopped out and plated over so i had to find an another location.

The reason i'm also sticking wth carbs is it makes the conversion from my GTI lump sitting in my other car alot easier. If i had to swap the full injection setup over i would have to change the fuel pump/accumulator/fuel tank/fuel lines, metering head etc, with carbs on the engine it means the block just need transferring over, a few wires need connecting and and tw inline regs for the fuel should be sufficient.

I was considering megasquirt to control the ignition but i think im going to pass on the that as i doubt id be able to set it up easily and itll probably give me more hasle than its wrth

and all comments are welcome fella good or ad so thanks very much :)

Dont get me wrong, I like most of what your doing. The first car I have ever driven was a mk1 gti when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I took my fathers friends car at the time and drove it around the block. I could not see much and the pedals were far off but the clutch was worn so I didnt stall it more than 3 or 4 times before I went off idling in 1st gear. Fun car. Keep it clean though. Sometimes less is more.

Hahahaha aww driving at 6 or 7 tut tut! mind you most kids in the uk are joyriding at that age and they drive better than most rally drivers since they know the streets alleyways and off-road sections like the back of thier hands.

the car will be kept clean, im planning on prepping two doors and a bootlid for spraying and there is rust to attend to on the arches, at some point probably late this year after the summer season ill take her off the road for a full body prep and probably set about smoothing the bay, if anything ill louvre the rain tray to allow more air to get to the carbs and possibly although ive never been keen on them incorporate transporter vents into the wings as they need removing at some point for rust treatment and re-spray either that or just duct air from the behind the grill as there is plenty of space there for ducting

today i started stripping beenas engine, i started with this
    [IMG]

and ended up getting loads removed, braided fuel lines, injectors, inlet manifold, cold start valve, aav, mc and servo, air filter, metering head, throttle body, coil, radiator, 4 branch is off but i need to remove the driveshaft before i can pull it out from under the car (as its welded to a flexi pipe grr).

some pics of the pics that have come off

theres more bits that came off but they are all the injection stuff i wont need, if anyone wants owt give us a shout

off back home for the weekend tomorrow but when i get back I've got to drain the oil, take off the two oil coolers, I've got a massive eurosport jobbie with a mocal sandwich plate, alternator, driveshafts, 4 branch and exhaust gotta come off too, unwire anything still connected and loosen up the bolts for the engine.

and the twin 40s should be with me by the end of next week, heres what i ended up blagging

    2 x Dellorto DHLA 40
throttle linkage (twin cable w/ throttle pedal adaptor)
    trumpets
    filters
    pressure reg
    turbo reg
    banjos
    Setting up Guide

everythings brand new, which is saweet.

things left to purchase for the conversion

8v big block inlet manifold - either mangoletsi (which have poop casts) or vw motorsport (rare) or rowlands (from SA, also rare as fook)
    facet red top pump
    fuel lines

oh and this was a rather pleasant sight to behold at pimhole scrappy

driveshafts just need to be removed from beena and engine unbolted and its ready to come out, I'm gonna paint it all up and probably replace the gearbox before it sees the muppets bay, for the time being the carbs will be going on the jb lump and see me through to all types and run to the sun then put the gti lump in after

Got a few bits and pieces done today,

also fitted the speaker covers on the door pods.

removed both exhaust systems off the car today and got the stainless steel mani on the muppet, and ordered my silver top competition fuel pump/filter king reg today so they should be here along with the carbs, woohoo! didnt bother getting any pics today as i was covered in cv grease haha

Tomorrow only got a few jobs to do, wire up harness pre-tensioners and re-fit speaker and door cards, drain oil and re-fill, fit stainless centre pipe and finish removing the g60s as I've sold them, just replacing them with vwIIs for the time being

cheers jaguar fella, i will deffo get a video when it roars or splutters into life for the first time :)

got a few things done at the weekend, harnesses are all wired up and door cards all fitted.

removed the g60 brakes and packaged them all up and put my 239mm setup back on, only to then win a 270mm tsr conversion on ebay  so they will be coming off again, but its got a set of new pads, braided hoses and calipers, i dont need the calipers so ill make up a VWII G40 239mm setup for sale complete with grooved/drilled discs and new pads

also got 2 mk2 rear disc stub axles and caliper carriers ready for some mk4 ally calipers :-D

so i still need the following things for that

    Rear Disc Shopping Conversion -

    Golf Mk4 Calipers
    Mk2 Rear Discs x 2 - GSF60340 - 15.95
    Mk2 Rear Pads Pagid ( 1 Set ) - GSF64601A - 14.90
    Mk2 Rocco 16v HB Cable x 2 - GSF73132 - 9.50
    Mk2 Rear Wheel Bearings x 2 - GSF41311K - 5.95
    Mk4 Caliper Hoses from TSR

was on a bit of a spending spree  bagged this for 15 quid, debadged twin spot grille, I'm not a fan of quad lights on mk1s but cant beat that for a bit of cheapness

The Carbs arrived in the post today, so i had a nosey around to see how complete they were and what i still needed to get, trial fitted them on a spare head and found out i need longer manifold studs 50mm is too small, measured it up and i need 80mm studs so will have a gander for them.

Also needed to get a 2-1 adaptor block for the throttle cables and a 3 way t-peice adaptor for the fuel line to the carbs, got these for 14 quid through eurocarb.

anyway some pictures of the carbs, trial fitted to the spare head and car to check out any fitment issues and clearance issues especially around the MC, its tight but perfectly do-able. Ill be fitting a 22mm master cylinder I've got in the house so ill route the brake pipes accordingly.

I've decided to mount the fuel pump and reg on the scuttle panel next to the coil, it'll just make for easing routing than having it go aruond the front. Does anyway know what i do with the mechanical fuel pump on the block? do i just leave it disconnected?

    trial fitting on spare head

    inlet manifold

not sure of make, holes are correctly ported for the inlet holes on the head however it could seriously do with some polishing internally

    a couple of randoms

them trial fitted on the car

    MC clearance, good enough :D

sorry for loads of pics but I'm sure someone out there will apprieciate them :D

oh and i still need to pick up a backbox, bushing kit and brake fluid before i get anywhere!

be careful with porting and polishing. What you want to do is actually smooth out the airflow and not increase it beyond what it needs to be. Over sized ports can actually hurt performance if done wrong as it will throw the mixture out of whack and cause a bad idle and minuscule low end torque.

Porting and polishing is a black art of sorts, not a single person that does that knows exactly how it will react when its done, its something people tend to do it with trial and error, pure flow rates does not make a port job good.

I would use the gaskets as a guide and get some markings, however observe the crush rate of the gaskets too as well as the output from the carbs.

Those carbs look very sexy btw, I would have used them regardless of going fi, you can always modify the carbs to work with injectors and act like throttle bodies down the line.

cheers dude, i wouldnt attempt the porting or polishing myself as without a flow bench its kinda pointless and futile, i know a few mates who are e ngineers so during the course of the summer ill get a few favours out of them for the price of a few beers and jobs a good un, i'm keeping a 1.6 gti head as a spare for a bit of a play with that one for fun, ive removed enough heads now to make the job possible in under an hour and with the carbs it makes removal even easier :)

debating whether to keep the car off the road for longer at the minute so i can fully restore a rear beam with discs and fully polybush the complete shell before putting it through an mot, i just like having the time while its off the road to be able to do all the little jobs and big ones without having to take a daily off the road (which leaves you needing to finish jobs in a short space of time, i love taking my time with things as you get more satisfaction with a job well done

btw are you a jaguar car fan? hence the name? my dad has an xkr, its lush the supercharger was almost as big as my g40 engine lol

Besides the fact that mechanics is fun. Could you explain to me why you are fixing a golf? Is it cost factor that they are cheap? I mean, i dont see them as any nice car being worth all the great effort and work your putting into it. Im not criticizing your work or anything, im just wonder why you would bother fixing something like this when there is much more stuff you could work on. Realistically, although you spend a lot of money, time and patience on this car, you will drive it around for a while but you will not ever get any return for it back. If your purely doing it for the fun of fixing up an old banger(although they're not that old) i completely understand as parts are cheap and they are in a great supply. But if it is for the liking of the car, could you explain why a golf? What makes them worth it?

Im sorry if i sound vague, im in a really strange mood.
