sodering iron huh?? for some reason i don't believe that but, i like the mod and i like your idea of using the "wall type jack" i was thinking of that too myself, (just never got arond to it),, keep it up , will deffinitly be following this one, not sure if i will post but will follow
Update Time Yesterday I went to The Home Depot. (and Radio Shack for hopefully the last time. At the Home Depot I bought a 2' x 2' piece of particle board (I scrapped the Aluminum but dont worry it will still look nice in the end), 2 other wood boards, plastic spray paint, wood spray paint, screws, some stainless steel bolts, and nuts. At the "Rat Shack" I got a line cable (that I cut apart for the headphone jacks) transistors and the jacks for the modular plates. These are the hex nuts that I bought. These will come in play for mounting the fans (the next part of the project). This what I cut yesterday. The round piece is what attaches to the table (I have to cut the slot in it but I need to get a reply from anthro on the thickness of their tables. You can also see the support frame. This morning I cut the other round piece but didn't take a picture. Here is a picture so that you can get an idea of what the console will look like. This morning I also sprayed some of the modular pieces. I will take pictures later when they are dryer. The whole console will be painted black, but I will not be bondoing the wall plates because I want them to remain modular. Once I get the electronics from Jameco I will install all of the switches and such to make sure I like it. Then I will assemble the console and puddy in any cracks in the wood or extra holes. Then sand and you know that routine. Then the whole structure will be painted black. I think that it will look really nice when its finished. Tomorrow I am going to Ikea to purchase the cabinet that I am using for the computers. This is the cabinet I decided on. The one I posted earlier is too small. This is how I plan to arrange stuff in the box. Thats all for now. I will probably post a picture of the black modular stuff this evening. Peace, Nick
i like the cabinet arrangment. thats a verry good idea for a mini server room type of a thing. great work. im watching this
Thats gonna be good, looks pretty sweet, i guess that once they are painted black they should look better.....
Gonna be a cool project imo. I've got the same cabinet in my room, but it isn't as spacey as it appears to be when you look at it on the ikea website...
awesome job man.. cabinet lay out looks good i would say mount all yr stuff on a thin sheet a ply wood so it can b pulled out to install new cards or ram or anything other wise once its in there its not as accessable as it could b
Major update today. I went to Ikea and CompUSA today (my mom came to so she paid for some stuff) This is a shot of everything I got. I ended up getting 2 cabinets that are each half the size of the big one and I like this better. So I needed to cut out fan holes and the PSU hole in the back of the cabinet and you can see this done. I figured you didn't need to see progress pics. Here is my only screw-up. I was filing the hole and the material is kinda thin...snap . Don't worry its hidden in the end. The fans mounted from the other side. The PSU hole is a little wacky, but I did it for the power to run through there cuz I want all of the cables coming out the hole in the middle. Here is the first test fit of the bottom level. And the top level. Here is my graph-link mounted (i need the calculator games....) You can see the wires run neatly along the walls. Wireless mouse reciever mounted and wires neat. Closeup of 2 fans and the wiring. I am planning on keeping the case as clean as possible. The fans will all link into a central junction then the cables will run to the console. Mobo with the first few cables attached. I am tring to decide on how to stabilize the mobo. I dont want to actually attach is to the cabinet. Ideas?? Maybe I will just use some zip ties....In fact, I have a good idea of how too..... Overall shot so far w/ the door closed. Door open. Now, since this project is not just about the PCs, but about the total room design I am gonna show you some of the other stuff I got for my room today. You probably wont get to see most of it implemented for a while though. I know simple but it was just so cool, and perfect for my room. I got 2 of these. They are picture/shelve lighting. Don't know exactly what I will use these for but I know I will use them. Zip ties and wire loom....cable management. A hook thingy for hoodies, hats, keys, etc. This will go next to my door. A paper tray. Got 2. Will go near the hook thing but near the desk (I think). Part of this project is organization. A file keeper. A cable bag?? It was only 2 bux so I thought I would test it out. Thats all for today. Lots more stuff tomorrow probably. I think my electronics stuff, PSU, and new HSF are coming tomorrow too. I should have the first PC up and running tomorrow. I didnt get to paint the rest of the wall jacks cuz it rained. I also have to redo some. I tried masking off the RCA jacks, but that didnt work so well so I am gonna sand em a little and try again (I removed the jacks, its just the plastic now.) Peace, Nick
*drool* oh man oh man i have always wanted to do this to my room......well i guess it is good to see your dreams fulfilled in the lives of others . great job on the PC cabinet though. i am impressed with the implementation of this. maybe you would want to concider a sliding tray for the mobo anc components? that way it is easier to access the PC for upgrades and whatnot. just a thought. it would take a set of drawer rails from home depot and a piece of plywood. props to you for what you have done though. this is going to be one HECK of a room!!
http://www.nzcnet.com/project-remodel/5/13.jpg I really like that, kept me mesmerized for a minute . Good luck, and I'll wait for the next update!
I've been to IKEA las saturday too, and I've seen that blue plexy lamp... It can be done with few plexy pieces and some bright LEDS, so I left it on the shelf and saved a lot of euros!!! Maybe I'll make a red version to fit my server dominant color... Anyway, it seems you've emptied the store!
AHHHHHHHHHHH I want to have that but lol I got too much crap in my room and when I stopped looking at the pictures of ur room at the monitor and looked at my room I sort of had a reality check , WOW my room is so bloody small LOL.
Looks like a good mod, I need to do something similar to my room. I've got a litttle home cinema thing going on in there with a load of game consoles, which as you can probably imagine results in a HUGE tangle of wires. Looks like I'll have to wait until the end of this school year though, seeing as I'm skint and the blasted coursework is piling up I've already done all my Ikea shopping, in fact everything in my room's from there, looks like their catalogue... looks like a girls room too come to think of it....
looks great NzC! Here's a tip to everyone: If you live in a place where you can't find mesh... take a trip to ikea.. buy either a paper tray, or a paper basket, and cut off the mesh. it's cheap and very easy.
Another pretty major update today. I am just about finished with the first computer. Right now I am just waiting for the Jameco order (damnit UPS!). My package from Newegg did arrive however! I opened it to see my new Zalman HSF (to replace the old ****ty one which took the CPU out with it (scared me ****less cuz they are ZIF sockets and that definately took some force)). Also a Thermaltake PSU. A slight prediciment....you have to install it with the other side in first cuz the way the retention camps are, but I needed the HSF facing this way because of the ducting. I ened up having to take it apart and put it back together to allow the duct to face the right way. If you look closely at the right retention support on the mobo you can see that it is cracked.... Installed succesfully (Zip tie is making up for the cracked retention support). The zip tie technique actually works well. Here is the HDD brackets that I made. ( I took apart my old case.) Here are the HDDs mounted. A quick test to make sure that everything is still working: OK! Ok laugh--I laughed. Yes it is a mod kit from BEST BUY!! Well I needed a round IDE cable. I could have gotten a too-short cable for $23 or I can get this with the longer cable (and a bunch of other crap) for $30. It came with a Nibbler (always wanted one anyway) some rubber molding (could be useful) a window that I wont use but might need the plexi (the HDD rack or something on the other case), a RED LED fan, a red CCFL, a grill, and a few other things. And this is where it is now. I just need the stuff from Jameco so that I can finish up the wiring (I need the molex pins). Other than that I am basically done. The main change in plan today is lighting. I was not going to light these cases, but now I think I will. Both will be red. This case will be lit with the CCFL. The other one (not started yet) will be with the fan and other LEDs that I have. Dont know if I will have much stuff tomorrow (working...well volunteering til a position becomes available...at the Science center tomorrow. Its actually cool. I get to work in this hardcore multimedia theatre. Lots of fun stuff.) For those of you who suggested the plywood, I considered this, but the top comes off quite easily and so does the shelf so I dont think I need it. Peace, Nick
Nah, this is cool I like the blue plexi stuff, looks cool. And maybe you could salvage a mobo tray for the mobo to be supported on?
