And put a KVM in it too, so it still functions as a monitor :hehe:

Don't open them! they use 2000 volts and can be highly dangerous if you do not know what you are doing

yes but 2000 volts does nothing without the amps there too.

If the discharge circuit is defective the crt's can act like Lydon jars. I've seen bare crt's that have been sitting around on a shelf shock people. If you discharge the display you'll be okay. We pop the back off them so the vacuum is gone. They're relatively safe after that. Watch out for the capacitors too.

I've done this a few hundred thousand times, never had a shock yet. Now that I don't have to work on crt based macs anymore, probably never will get a shock. :)

it's about 20,000volts won't kill you but will hurt like hell.
there is a black suction cap on the top that holds the HV.

the fly back transfers make for good HV projects but other than that not many useful part.

the one with the flat back will stand up on the floor, so you can use it as a garbage can once you've ripped out the insides.

or you could modify it to be a MAG-RAIL gun that shoots cd's of death!!! LOL, no, the Mac idea is good but an even better idea is the garbage can that actually has a working comp in it...

see, best of both worlds, the Mac idea AND the garbage can...

Please for the love of God dispose of them! :p

I hate CRTs, we have 50+ laying around at our college. They lay there because the college is too cheap to dispose of them! >_<

You could do the imitation imac style pc in an ugly old crt, but that's about it. Pick one and the other two go in the trash.

You could probaly use the transformer inside to make a jacob's ladder or one of those high voltage spark speaker things - but iirc they emit some sort of radiation.

A fully charged cap will hurt you, but it probably wont kill you, especially if you're a young lad with a good heart. (No gaurantees however :D) Very high voltage transformers like that in a tv will hurt you, but they won't kill you - the current is too low. Maybe if you stuck it in your mouth it might kill you?
Discharge all the big caps and the crt like how Barry linked and you'll be fine.

There's only so many things you can do with junk unfortunately.
If they still work then maybe a school or library or someone around you might want them?
