Quick question, how much did the CF (with the resin/epoxy)cost you and where did you buy it from? I'v looked around eBay and a 36"x36" cloth is ~$25.

Sorry if this was already answered. I haven't read through the entire thread yet.

    Lol, :thumb::rock::clap:

This is the store I got it from.

    http://stores.ebay.com/elitemotoring

I got the 2x2 3k, which actually looks like it's dropped in price since I last bought. Note that all of their fiber comes in 50" widths, so the price is really pretty good.

$25 a yard isn't bad for most fabrics. A decent upholstery velvet is about 30.

...D*mn, you got me thinking about it for a moment. -Anyway, are we going to get an update before you get 10 pages of replies?:hehe:

Thanks m8. Gonna grab a small set first (2 yards @ $12 each of this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Carbon-Fiber-Cl...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c0be76d66 ) is a pretty good deal to experiment with imo.

PS: Any chance you could write a guide to working with CF for PC related stuff. This seems to be missing from the "Guide" section (that or I fail . One more thing, I've worked with Fibreglass a lot (for rockets), how different is CF from this?

Yeah, the cost per yard isn't horrible, it's the fact that you need multiple layers for strength. That's when the cost starts adding up.

    Monday cheaps!

    That's tomorrow already!

Wow, thanks man! I appreciate it!

I could probably write a guide when I get a chance. If you've worked with fiberglass, the concept is similar. The biggest difference is the weave. The carbon fiber weave is very sensitive, and can be misaligned or disturbed if you aren't careful. Obviously a big reason to use CF is for it's looks, and you don't want to disrupt that through careless handling. You also want to use masking tape on all of your bare edges and then cut in the tape. The fiber will fray like crazy at the edges. It's one of the biggest reasons I oversized my work. I've got to cut a full 5cm off of each side.

With the weekend come and gone, it's time I update all of you on my progress. It's not much, but as always, it's still a step forward. So, how about we get the case out of the mold? I designed the mold so that not only would it be reusable, it would be easy to remove. The first thing I did was to set the case on the workbench, and start tapping the core from one side to the other.

    A few more taps...

    The core removed.

Now it was a matter of removing the aluminum shell.

It's finally free! The case is completely removed from the mold. You can see a few small voids on the interior, but those are a non-issue at this point. Anything that remains after the exterior holes are cut, will be filled in with resin and leave a smooth surface behind.

Now, I'll add a few comments about the case itself. It's strong! In fact, it's shockingly strong. Sure, everyone knows carbon fiber has excellent strength properties, but until you experience it for yourself, it's a little hard to quantify. This case has almost no flex or deflection. I can press on the center of both sides with about all the strength I can muster, and it just barely moves. It's just that solid. On top of it's strength, it's also incredibly light. Also, I'm saving the rest of the surface work until after all the holes are cut. This thing will be as smooth as glass once completed. All in all, this was the perfect building material for this case, and I can't wait to start making my first cuts in it. Stick around for the fun coming up next!

That is super sexy! Ive played around with some carbon fiber rods before and you are totally right when you say its hard to believe how rigid it its. I feel the need to go make something with carbon fiber now. Keep it up!

I'm happy that CF has lived up to the expectations you held it to man - not that I had any doubt.
Experiencing your reaction rekindles my-own faded excitement for the material.

Great-job on the fabrication, good-luck with the rest.
