i have the idea to make new speaker boxes out of plexi. then, on the inside, mount some sound activated neons like in my case. i think that would be pretty badass :D but, a few problems, how would i go about wiring up the lights so that theyre not wired to my psu? could it maybe get enough poswer if i spliced the wiring to the speaker wiring or wouldnt that work? also, i have no idea what to use to bond the plexi together. need a little help ;)

also, i took the time to make a prototype in rhino and i rendered it in bryce 5. so.....here it is. ill render some more images, after i make some speakers and neons in rhino ;)

You could probably get the power from the speakers, but you would have to make sure you had DC, and you had resistors and stuff so that it doesn't blow your neons or something bad like that

you could use ac-dc 12vdc wall warts for a dependable power source for each speaker. then you could drive all kinds of things off of it, maybe even LCD's with graphical output levels

Now THAT would be cool.. Having like a graph ( I dunno what it is called.. Like the thing in winamp that changes to the music) in the speaker. That would be damn good :)

depending on what kind of power you have going into your speaker. they make 12v and 5 v invertors, so if you didnt have 12 you might have 5. i dunno.

they do make clear speaker boxes for car stereos and stuff. maybe that will help you in your search.

as for connecting the panels, i suggest lots and lots of clear, non reactive silicone caulk, if not, yer boxes whill wheeze and whistle really bad .... would look really pimp with black allen head bolts and some sort of inserts, like maybe cement in mobo standoffs or something similar.

you could get another psu, and just wire it up (http://www.virtualfish.co.uk/gallery/pages/case02/index.htm), its two pins in from the left on the top row (black and green), you can hook them up to a switch... just like using the psu as a transformer (power adapter, whateva) :D

talk to some electrician types for advice aswell!

and good luck, your case kicked ass! ;)

I'd say that you should just get a 12v or 5 volt (whichever you need) plug for the wall. You know, the ones that they toss in with phones, or external modems, or whatever. I'm sure All Electronics or BG Micro (or Maplin for you Brits!) will have something you can use for just a couple bucks. And if the cord isn't long enough, I'm sure that it's just a simple solder job to extend it. Then run it along the wall or under the carpet, and you're done. Sounds like a great idea, btw!

Nice idea Mayze. I would love to see that speaker in action!

By the way what program did you do that 3D image in?

    Cool!!

I'd been thinking about a mod like this for months, ever since I saw something like it on the Virtual-Hideout news page. I would go with brianpodskalny with his "inverter" idea (using your PSU would be difficult, and you would always have to have your speakers by your computer).

I think that sound sencitive Neons would look cool, I also think a graphic equalizer would look great, but I think it would be a "virtual pain" to construct.
