Yes, as the title says, I'm going to build a Gameserver for LANs, especially for Quake III (and all quake III engine based games ). For maximum mobility the case should be compact and aircooled. I'm also looking forward to put a 5" PSone LCD in it, so you even don't need a monitor. I thought I would paint the case silver, but then i saw piloux really impressive HL² case and I decided to paint the case like the blackmesa, but no anxiety I just paint it like piloux case I don't know exactly, which hardware I will put in it, but it would be slot a mainboard with a 500MHZ or faster CPU, 512MB RAM, geforce 2mx graphics card with tv out (so I can also use it to view movies on tv or something else...) I think this should be enough for a quake III or return to castel wolfenstein server. Harddisks woul be one quantum U-SCSI 1GB Drive with window and one 4GB Micropolis U-SCSI HDD, and a SCSI DVD-ROM. They're lieing here around, and the server wouldn't be used for filesharing so they are fast enough. But, enough said.. i think you guys would like to see some pics, yap? So, first some pics of my old bigtower. This was the case of my first self paied pc, an my first mod I wanted to mod it in a hard rock style, so just polished metal an not so straight lines... but then I saw a better and smaller case, so i dropped this mod... It just stood in the edge for a long time... I planed to make a gameserver out of it for some time, but i had no idea what it should look like, but then i saw piloux great case and i got an inspiration so i started to mod the case... ..."he! but you said something about very compact?!?!"... ...yap And then i took the handsaw an cuttet it a little bit Looking if it fits I don't need this part, so i dropped it But before i drilled some holes, to mount the top with screws on front and backside of the case. First i thought about using old parts of the front, but i dropped this idea... im going to do a complete new front out auf several layers alu and plexiglas. But to put the front smooth on the casefront i needed to remount the top. so i had to cut out two little edges. So, i think here you can see good why i had to cut out the edges. After this, i took the left sidepart of the case. And saw some parts off Then i put the remainder on the case and marked, where to cut. So, this should be the new sidepart... so, i'm going to eat now something and then i will post more
I have never seen someone cutting down the case to about half the size... But should be fun to see how this will look like when finished
Maybe I missed something... What are you going to use to cover the case? Weld some metal? Just curious, very interested in seeing the finished project!
so, now some more pics Then i had to cut the fixture for the cd-roms On the left the original and on the right the cutted fixture The fixture was mounted to the top wih screws, so i didn't need to drill holes, just screw it Then i thought about bringing some sound into the case. I found this 8cm 5W speaker in my hardware box. And belive me, or not it just fitted in the original hole you see in the right corner of the picture!!!! So, drill some holes... ...and screw it! First i thought about using the speaker for the mainboard, but then i decided that i will use it later for windows sounds and connect it to the soundcard. Then i cutted the reight fixture. the cutted fixtures This little piece of the mobo tray had to leave otherwise i couldn't mount the right fixture fits good put all together looking if the drives still fit, with an broken harddrive and 5/4 inch adaptor (well, the rason why it is broken, is not the window ) Here i cutted out a part of the front to mount the dvd drive fits exactly And here is the reason why i can't use every mainboard and full size atx boards, between the chips on the mobo and the cd-rom is just enough space for a sheet of paper This black thing on top of the front is a 12cm papst blower And it's really powerfull exactly 5,3W, you can cut sausages with it So it would have enough power to cool ethe Micropolis SCSI drive down Hey, isn't there something missing? And here with mounted fan *impressive* http://www.8ung.at/smovefiles/modding/quake_server/quakeserver_case_55.jpg[7img] Here i drilled some holes in the original openings for the rear fan, but why? [img]http://www.8ung.at/smovefiles/modding/quake_server/quakeserver_case_54.jpg After some filing action, it was nearly perfect And i started to cut out a part for the powerplug of the psu Drilling some holes for the screws. On the left is the bushing (i'm not shure, if it is the rigt word, but freetranslation.com said so ) Then i took the side part(s) and removed the hotglue from the backside. After removing the olg glue i brushed the metal, so that the glue would better hold on it. Here i put some uhu epoxy 300KG glue on a part of alu. The glue really roXX, 300KG means, you can sit on it with 3 fat people an it won't break!!!! So i put the alu behind the two sideparts and let the glue dry While the glue dried i decided to plug some of the holes in the case with filler. So first brush the metal... ...and then fill the holes Here the sidepart with the dry glue After grinding For the "little" space between the two parts, we needed filler While filling the space, i also mounted an alu lattice to the right cut out. Because i got a top window i have to paint also the inside of the case, so i need to fill the sidepart from both sides. So i glued the lattice with the filler on the sidepart and it really functions After filling After grinding And this is how it looks at present So, what i'm going to do now is to cut some plexiglas for the window and glue it like í did with the lattice. Yap, before i paint the case with primer When i will paint it with primer, i'will put some adhesive tape on it, it is hard to explain for me in english, but you'll see later So, sorry for my bad english hope you can just understand a bit of what i wrote
Impressive work there, although I can't help feeling it would've been less work to start from scratch
this should be nice btw i really love those old scsi drives (guess what my server is booting from old 1 Gig Quantum 50 pin scsi2 drive) gonna watch this one
So, finally the psu arrived It's a 200W Newton Power Ltd. PSU, which was acutal build for Siemens Scenic 600 800 & T series so it is other dimensioned. It's higher, deeper, but it's narrower than a normal ATX PSU. The place where it would be mounted As you can see, there is some space left between the front and the psu, there i would mount the a quantum 1GB scsi hdd with window. I will turn the psu into a chemical reaktor, so the fan grill will be replaced with a biohazard lasercut. Then i will put some green leds in it, for the chemical glow, and i alsothink about changing the wires into some green uv active ones. The case of the psu will be painted like the other parts of the case.
So, here's a little update what i did firday and saturday First i changed the original 92mm delta fan (the right one) of the psu with an japan motors dc koala (the left one), it's higher and it looks more like an industrial fan, so it's perfect for my mod http://www.8ung.at/smovefiles/modding/quake_server/quakeserver_case_93.jpghttp://www.8ung.at/smovefiles/modding/quake_server/quakeserver_case_95.jpg So, first i drilled 15 holes into a alu l profile Then i glued one led in every hole Then i soldered (hope it's the right word ) 5 leds in line, so i can connect them directly to 12V. Testing them 15 leds were to bright, it wouldn't fit the atmosphere of quake III, so i just cutted 5 LEDs off. The result was exactly that what i wanted and what i needed. Testing how it would look like in the case (it's brighter in reality but not too bright ) the leds will be connected wih the led of the scsi controller, so it would flash, when tere is activity on the scsi bus, so it would look like a broken lamp or something, but i will also include a switch so you can change between flashing and permanent lightning
Wow, nice job mutilating that case It looks awesome! I hope this case turns out the way you want it. Honestly, I think it also looks like its time for some Bondo TRANSLATION: Wimmern, netter verstümmelnder Job, daß Fall , das er ehrfürchtig schaut! I must admit at first I thought this would be the most ghetto mod to ever grace bit-tech but it's actually turning out quite nice. My only suggestion, straighten the edges on the window cuts, please! L J
hah you wanna see ghetto you should see the machine hooked up in my brother-in-law's bedroom, literally made from cardboard. I'll see if I can get some pictures. As for the mod, looking good. I wanna see more and yes, straighten out the edges!
THX for the comments But, why should i straighten the edges? I think it looks better this way, especally, when the case get's the rusty look at the end
Anyone remember the first Quake adverts (just before the game was released... we hardly knew what it looked like, but we knew it was going to kick Doom's ass!)? The air was buzzing with excitement. My favorite was the one with a picture of a wholesome family scene: a wholesome, grey-bunned grandma with half-moon glasses surrounded by the wholesome little children in the kitchen, all smiling in the camera. Grandma holding up a big pie with a Quake logo on it. The caption said: "QUAKE IS GOOD FOR YOU". Which is true. Quake lavishes the soul, and refreshes the mind (not to mention discharges some serious aggression). And it inspired some great modding. Mod on! (PS: they did another one on the "wholesome" theme :here:...)
Nice modding I've also modded an bigtower to an smaller one (miniITX), with practically the same case, only another front mounted on it.
Nooooo There isnt another page ahh well, this looks promising, i need a new server case.. Looks like a challange
