I've always had a thing for hideous old TV's. The shitty brittle plastic knobs and switches that take too much effort to turn around, the faded beige façade, the faux wooden detailing and a sound so tinny it makes your ears bleed. I'm also a fan of computers, so combining the two seemed like the next logical step. This computer will be used to replace the TV in my kitchen, streaming video and music across my network to it. Nothing particularly exciting. I'm undecided on my choice of OS or the final hardware as I feel it's pretty irrelevant at this stage... On to the beast! I introduce you to the Lincoln IC Portable Deluxe! Mono sound, a panoramic 12" screen, UHF and VHF aerial connections. High quality stuff man. And after 20 Minutes at the hand of my screw driver and pliers. As you can see, I've got quite a fair bit of room to play about with in this. There's more than enough room for a µATX mobo along the bottom or side of the case, a 3.5" mobo and a smallish PSU. I'm currently undecided as to what size of mobo I am going to install. I've got a choice of some pretty old µATX boards with about 1.6Ghz Celerons fitted, but I would much rather get a reasonable spec'd Mini ITX board second hand on eBay. We will just see. I'm obviously not going to be using the actual original CRT ( ) so I will be purchasing a appropriately sized LCD to fit instead, which is where my first question lies. What software is there available (For Linux or Windows, as I've said, I'm not sure what OS I'm going with.) that will allow me to shape the displayed picture on the LCD to fit around the curved shape of the façade? I've got many other plans for this little project, but as nothing is set in stone I won't divulge in them until they come to fruition. And my apologies for the bareness of this post. I've not actually got much I can do with this project until I know exactly what hardware I will be using. Best regards!
Haha this is cool, especially since I haven't really witnessed the longer lifecycle of the old TV's/Radio's. As to your question about the LCD software. I know there is software out there that allows you to use a certain area of the LCD. If you can make it so it only shows the actual screen (including the curves) I don't know. Some more experienced ppl might have a solution though BTW: Cool pic that first one, vagely see your reflection in the TV, what camera is that you're using? Goodluck with this
Neat project and I'll be watching. I have an old Philco tv inherited from my grandmother that I'd like to mod someday. There's just a certain charm about them.
