Hehe similar setup Dredog, was it ure post in the hardware forum about nforce2 matx mobos? which did u finally choose?

I wont be using the motherboard tray that setup is simply to test all the hardware, install OS and just generally making sure everything is ok.

The motherboard will be mounted straight into the acrylic with standard brass standoffs.

I spoke to my Grandad today and i can go over on saturday to build the case. The whole construction of the case should be finished on saturday and i'll see if i can get hold of some spray paint to do the paint job, that might have to wait until next weekend though.

I'm looking forward to start building it, the idea of having a completely custom build case is really starting to sound good :D

Thanks for the comments guys, i hope you wont be disappointed by the result!

The sun design like my avatar will be on the front panel, sprayed in orange paint. The sun rays will bend around across the panel to the left of the front panel and the top panel as an extension of the sun. The grey bits will be left clear and the panel to the right of the front which will have the motherboard mounted on will also be see through along with the back.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

I chose the Shuttle MN31N because it had the best onboard audio. The one i really wanted was the black aOpen one w/ the 1394 but i think it was discontinued.

lol...is it gonna look something like this?

I guess great minds think alike.

Anyway i'm not sure i'll use this tray, but i am really curious to see how yours will end up!!! Keep up the great work.

You might not want to hear this Dredog but mine is the black pearl Aopen one with firewire! I got it froms dabs.com and they dont ship outside UK so not much help to you.

I think you've been reading my mind lol  is that a motherboard tray or will it make up one of the sides of the case?

no definately not. the case should be constructed mainly with screws i think so taking it apart for painting should be easy. plus acrylic when painted from the inside gives a really nice finish.

So let me get this straight. You got the Aopen MK79G-1394 motherboard!?!?!?!:jawdrop: I searched every where for it but couldn't find it.

That plexi tray i showed you was gonna be used as part of a removable mobo tray not a side panel.

    Construction Complete

I think its about time for an update!

I've gone from virtual modding, with no real modding to a completely constructed case hehe. This does not means its finished but aside from the possible paint job the actual building is pretty much done.

Before i get on with the pics i'd just like to say that i have a new found respect for anyone that has built a case from scratch, i never imagined how much it involved and i can now really appreciate the skill of people that can build a case from scratch with such precision and achieve such a professional finish.

Before anyone mentions it, i know a few places are a bit sketchy, and things could have been better, but for my first real mod, aside from a couple of shodddy windows and nasty paint jobs, i am extemely pleased with the outcome.

Lastly i'd like to point out that this could never have been done without the huge help and input from my grandad who put a lot of time and effort into this.

Enough with the blerb onto the pics. I might add notes to a few but i'd rather just stick up the pics and i'll answer any questions you have.

blah blah blah here we go....

Started off saturday with a box full of bits.

    The workshop.

Cardboard mockup testing sizes with the acrylic cut into rough sizes.

    One large circular saw :naughty:

    First corner pieces in place.

    We have 4 sides!

The metal brackets used to join the case.

The end of my GeForce3 needed to be sacrificed to the modding gods.

    Back panel cut out, testing...

The motherboard was mounted on dowl with a hole drilled through the centre and long bolts.

    HDD and PSU fitted.

    Rear exaust fan cut out.

Grandad loving it with his grinding machine! the metal frame needed reducing at the top a bit.

    Close up of motherboard mount.

Before the protective sheeting was removed...

Mobo panel and lid disassembled with sheeting removed.

    Back panel, naked.

The DVD drive was mounted vertically with two pieces of acrylic to raise it up to avoid the metal frame.

More sacrifices to the modding gods, the end of a rounded IDE cable got the chop.

Half constructed getting everything plugged in is tricky.

    All sides together.

Not the power switch cable now longer goes over in a funny fashion!

My camera didn't know where to focus! hehe

The flash is the only light source in the room.

    Clean desk!

    And for the finalé...

Wow thats a lot of pics. Hope you like it.

I really love the clean lines of the metal with the acrylic and i am undecided wether i will go through with the sun design.

This was definately a challenge but i am really pleased with the results, hope you like it.

    Cheers :thumb:

    [EDIT] pics fixed ;)

WOW, Looks greta, first use me seen of the orange LED fans, Great work :thumb: :thumb:

Some Heatsinks are ment to be used with the fan sucking, and some say use it blowing on to the heatsink. One way round, i think sucking over  is ment to lessen the "dead spot" effect. I always use them blowing on to the heatsink  .
