Announcing my new case, called Super Mini Cube, it is basically a Shuttle case on steroids. I have decided to ditch the open 3½" bay and the hidden one and add another 2 5¾" bays, so I can have a DVD and a Writer in a mini case and a Noritake VFD that was on BiT-Tech a few days ago.

I wont go into many more details expect to include a image of the start design in CAD, and yes I know there is no back or base yet.

Dimensions yet to be confirmed are (L) 13" (W) 10" (H) 10" no idea in cm or mm, i still not got onto the metric system yet :)

Lets us know what you think

    well

uhm , I like the concept ... but I would make it a total CUBE (all side are the same ... like everything 12" .. or everything 10" .. or too keep it in the middle everything 11" or something

    nice drawing :)
(not mientioning there is no back or base )

I got 2 years of CAD behind me .. and we only got to the 3D drawing the last trimister .. and we didnt got it so good ... we spended alot of time with the Mechanical CAD .. with all its dumbass built in drawings .. who needs that crap anyway

    :)

    good luck with it !

are u going to built the whole case on yourself ? in aluminium ? ... MAKE a whole article with every bit of detail you can think off !!! I'm sure it will get on the site , cuz I feel there is a need of case making from scratch on the site !

looks nice. just one question though. whats the light grey area inside the window (i assume its a window) following my eye it doesn't look like that can be the opposite edge of the case because it doesn't seem to follow right.

my first thought was that it was the other side which like i said doesn't seem right to my eye. second i thought maybe it was the rear of the case that was supposed to be on a hinge or somthing, but i fail to see why you would put the rear on a hinge and still the angle wouldn't be right. its either a piece of the side with the window to make the window a pacman type shape or somthing is wrong in the graphic. it seems like there will be a simple answer but i cant seem to figure it out.

another thing. what program did you use to design that. im thinking of trying out my hand in making a custom case and im looking for a nice cad type program to throw together a model with.

I'm thinking that is the bottom rear corner of the 5.25 drive or drive cage.

ahhhh, i think you might be right. it seems to line up with the bottom left corner of the lower 5.25 bay.

With regards to the size it will need tweaking, once I have the mobo and hsf and a PSU (still need to find a mini one of those) modeled i'll add it in.

It will be made in 2mm alu or maybe titanium depending on the costs. Near where I live is a company who will laser cut metal from CAD drawings, so I need to degisn it all first and get a quote, shouldnt be more than £200 for the case.

I will make sure I cover every detail in as much detail as I can, also when it is done, i can post renders of the case as well. Also when it is all done I may release the CAD drawings but who knows.

Im using PTC ProDESKTOP 2000i2 to make the case in, purely as it is the one we had at uni. It only took about an evening to do the top, two sides, front, 2 cd rom drives and two hard drives, had to remeber how to use it (damn all that beer)

With regards to teh mysterious grey object in the window, Deviate got it right, it is indeed the back corner of the lower CD-ROM drive.

    More Updates Later

    UPDATE:

I have moved to design two of the case now, and have moved to a 12" cube, so I can use 12" titanium, however I am unable to find a UK supplier does anyone know of a company in the UK??

    Cheers

What power PSU you after? cos in work here we've got some gateway pc's with mini PSU's that measure 2" by 3" but they're only 90w

Um, you may want to run that decision past someone who's spent some time in a machine shop befoer you plunk down any cash.

And why not stay with 10"? I know it can be done, and it makes the design problems more challenging (and fun).

That Case would look swell with the same round window on the top and right side also!

    Just a thought.

    PTC ProDESKTOP 2000i2 ...

Drives me totally round the bend :eeek:

but every time i try to use Rhino or 3d max i get spo frustrated coz its made so easy on PDT, PDT sucks for doing curved objects tho. but still pretty cool, i nabbed a copy from college too.. shush...

I concur! And once you go up to 12" I don't think you can keep "super mini" since I'm fairly sure I've seen that done before...

    bust0aster,

    Yes sorry titanium sheeting.

    Phat-At,

    Im getting a flex-atx 200w one.

    linear,

I cant do 10" cube but the mobo is 10.32" so love to see someone solve that problem. Why do you say about running it by someone who works ina machine shop for?? All the peices will be pre-cut so i just bolt them together.

    GreySpaceAlien,

Nice idea, but on one side the window wouldnt show very much, but maybe for the top, with a cd-rom window mod.

it wouldn't really work but mounting the mobo on a 18 degree angle from the floor would make a mobo of that size fit in a 10" case. so if you really wanted to you could mount your mobo in on an angle. :D

Why not get a smaller motherboard I have seen a few micro-ATX boards which are less than 10" a side. Like Linear said it would make a more challenging and fun task.

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to add a link to the Epox board I saw. It's just 9.65 x 9.57 inches.
