ok i started off with a maplins aluminium enclosure box and then used me drill and file to make the holes for the i/o plate, the mobo mountings, the blowhole, the switches and leds. the case was then sprayed metallic silver, painted professionally by my father at work. (its vauxhall star silver). i then waxed the case aswell to bring up the car finish shine. the reason why i didnt keep the original alu colour was because it was easily scratched and fingerprints showed up real bad. vandal resistant buttons from maplins, leds and chrome led holders from maplins. its a gigabyte 7vkml matx board, 800mhz duron, chopped 10mm alu heatsink, 128mb ddr ram, seagate barracuda IV 60gb, 1U 150w psu from powerline.co.uk, antec bl00 fan. thats about it for the specs, oh and its onboard lan and video. as for the motherboard mountings, i used some plastic nuts and bolts, put a couple of bolts together to raise the motherboard off the case. future mods im considering, a window w/ blue cold cathode, lcd panel in the front (white writing on blue back), blue UFO mod. ok enough of that, here are the piccies sorry about the quality, the pics dont do it justice. full directory of pics can be found here http://gurdas.co.uk/images/slimzilla
heh thanks. i didnt really have a choice about the layout, i had to go and buy parts that would fit, for example, thats the smallest psu i could find, and it cost £75 how would i go about making a hd window?
its an old coolermaster aluminium jobby. it was like 50mm tall, but that was too tall, so i cut 40mm of it off im getting, cpu idle 53c cpu load 61c case idle 31c case load 36c im actually going to make a custom copper heatsink.
Also mabye a heatpipe or laptop cooler would be a better option for you. They use blower fans, and very low profile heatsinks. I don't know where to buy them (Or if you can)
ah as for the hd mod, i will do it to this old 500mb one i got lying around, i mean i can just put it in for show
Mabye make the 500mb run the system cache, and the other have to tur data on it. That way you can still see something moving. Or just hack a fried drive to a circuit and make a totaly fake version.
i really dont want to run anything on the 500, if i just plug in the power cable, will the header still move occasionally? how would i make the "fake" version?
Yeah, you DEFINATELY don't want to do this for the first time on anything you don't mind b0rking. But it WILL look champ. Nice job on the rest, tight, clean and well thought-out.
yeah but that one was a lot cleaner done in my opinion... I have one of these sitting under my bed waiting for me to work on it... was going to be a divx/mp3 box for the home theater... yet to get around to putting it together and getting it going... too much class work and it was an accomplishment to get it to the US from Maplins... Thanks Nigel
yeah thats stus case, i know about 6-7 people basing their computers off the same box, but its the matter of how they turn out, and you KNOW no one can beat the l337 spray job on mine right ive looked at the 500mb drive, and the top is a bit naff if i put a window in it, so i will look around for some other duff drives i can work on, and which will look cool. btw, if the drive is dead, how can i get the head and disc spinning?
Nice case, but one thing though. Out of all the stunning colours there must be at Vauxhall, why did you pick that one? It looks slightly dull to me, but then again it might just be the photograph. Also, an idea for that top blow-hole. It would look crisp if you stelth mounted (the type with the screws glued to the inside) a laser cut grill. All-in-all and excellent job I think. PS: Where did ya get that PSU, it's perfect for something I'm planning.
i picked silver because it went with the buttons and chrome led holders, and it is not dull, its just the pictures that makes it look like that. if you see a silver vauxhall going by, thats what colour it is. and about that lazer grill thing, i was gonna do the exact same thing psu from powerline.co.uk ring them up.
i've been planning a computer in a box like that one, though i'm going to shop around to see what dimensions are available. unfortunately, i will not likely be able to do it for a while because i'm saving up for a laptop, and they're rather pricey.
well that case cost me £11 buttons: £12 led and holders: about £5 mobo: £55 ram: £25 heatsink and processor: Free psu: £75 hdd: £75 blue fan: £10 so it cost me about £270
Nice looking sweeeeeeeeet....... Keep those pics posted... Does anybody have the link to this thread? http://www.btinternet.com/~swinyard/moomin/side.jpg
